The Rodese Republic (Rodese: Republica Rodesa) is a country in western Belisaria bordering (Eona?) to the east, and Vannois and Latium to the south, with Gelonia and a maritime border with Arthurista to the west. Its territory surrounds the Lazarene Sea, with access to the Angusta Sea to the south and the Salacian Ocean to the west. Internally, the Rodese Republic consists of the eponymous sovereign city of Roda and its dependencies spanning the Lazarene. Roda is in contention for the title of the oldest independent republic still in existence, having been founded in the year 797 and negotiating its independence during the Latin-Audonian split of the late 11th century. The Republic has remained as a neutral secondary power and stable fixture in the western Belisarian landscape for nearly a millennium, sitting at the head of a expansive mercantile network spanning three continents for much of its history. Following a difficult period of transition through the first half of the 20th century, the modern Rodese economy has risen to regional prominence on the basis of a lucrative entertainment and tourism industry concentrated in the city of Roda supported by the agricultural and light manufacturing sectors of the surrounding dependencies. The Rodese Republic benefits politically and economically from its central position in the West Belisarian region, depending on and profiting from its connections with the wealthy states that surround it.
