2019-2020 Asuran League

The AFA Asuran League, formerly known as the Asuran Cup is an annual club football competition organised by the Asuran Football Association and contested by top-division Asuran clubs. Clubs qualify for the competition based on their performance in their national leagues and cup competitions.

In 2016 the FFA Champions Cup was created, eclipsing the Asuran League as the top-tier domestic footballing competition. Now Asuran league champions qualify for the Champions Cup or its associated qualification rounds rather than the Asuran League. Depending on league coefficient, teams finishing between 2nd and 6th place within their respective league qualify for the Asuran League. Winners of domestic trophies may also qualify for the Asuran League.

Formation

The Asuran League was formed in 1960 as the Asuran Cup and was the first pan-Asuran domestic footballing tournament. For the early years of the Asuran Cup, the tournament merely featured a knockout system of the domestic champions of each Asuran nation. For the majority of its existence as the Asuran Cup, the tournament was not held in as high a regard as the existing domestic leagues, with the Midrasian and Navish league titles, in particular, being viewed as more competitive and prestigious trophies.

By the 1990s however, and the tournament's rebranding as the Asuran League, far greater emphasis was placed on the competition, owing to a huge increase in prize money thanks to sponsorship deals and greater international television exposure. However, as the tournament soon came to be dominated by a small cabal of teams footballing authorities developed the FFA Champions Cup as the premiere domestic footballing compeition in Aeia, reducing the influence the Asuran league once held. Winners of the Asuran League now gain qualification to the following years' Champions Cup tournament.
