Type 28 / Hakan Class Frigate
The Hakan-class (Guardian) frigates were the main surface combatants of the Sceptred Navy from 1990 to 2020. The frigates were designed and built to be versatile warships capable of tackling a wide variety of missions either alone or as part of a task force. The multi-purpose frigate's specialization lies in Anti-submarine warfare, with a towed sonar array allowing passive detection of submerged submarines.
Initially, eight frigates were ordered in 1985. All eight frigates were constructed and commissioned from 1985 to 1995, but in 1993, two of the frigates were controversially sold to a foreign navy. The remaining six vessels continued to serve in the Sceptred Navy until 2020, when four of the ships were prematurely retired. The two most recently constructed frigates remain in service into the present. The last two of the class are expected to be replaced in the 2020s by Type 38 frigates.
