The flag of Trellin (Trellinese: Edhur Trellika), officially known as the Standard of the Trellinese Empire (Trellinese: Aëroth Tarhoi Trellika), is a rosewood or burgundy Thaerine cross, outlined in white that extends to the edges of the flag, on a deep navy field; the vertical part of the cross is shifted to the hoist side.

Design history

The Trellinese national flag originates in the Ethlorek tradition of house pennants. In ancient Trellin, each noble house had its own pennant, a long, streaming flag designed to be flown from horseback or river-going craft, to identify its members on the battlefield. These pennants were usually many times longer than they were tall. The so-called Thaerine cross that adorns most versions of the modern Trellinese flag — a star formed of four triangle-topped squares around a hollow square — began as a much more elaborate star. It was simplifed to resemble a Christian cross during the reign of either Behrod II or Origoz I. During the pennant era, symbols were generally kept close to the hoist; this balance was retained when the flag became square, leading to the "Nordic"-style cross that now appears on the national flag and royal standard.
