The Republic of Irzemai, most commonly known as Irzemai, is a landlocked nation located on the continent of Nortua, bordered to the north by Taymaite, to the east and south by Zoygaria, and to the west by BDDV. The country has a small population of 521,000, with the capital and largest city of Rini consisting of more than half the country's population with mostly ethnic Irzemi and a significant Rumani minority. The territory of present-day Irzemai has for centuries been a crossroads for various peoples in Eastern Nortua, including Versenians, Kytians, and Grelenders. Beginning in the 15th century, Irzemai became part of the Zoygarian Empire and was so until it gained independence following Zoygaria's decline after the World War in 1956, at which point it established itself as a republic. In 1995, Zoygaria invaded Irzemai and Coaitte in a deadly war, but its forces eventually withdrew in 1999. Since 2002, Irzemai has been ruled by President Warc Handon, who ignored Parliament's decisions to join the Alliance of Nortuan States, has abolished term limits, suspended elections, and established what international observers have labeled as an authoritarian government. In January 2023, a coup attempt led to Handon declaring martial law and effectively isolated Irzemai from the outside world. Irzemai is a member of the Coalition of Crown Albatross.
