The Federative Republic of Marirana has had since independence several periods in which the position of head of state and head of government be separated. Since 1713 under the 8 constitutions Marirana has possessed two have included a separate head of state and government. The separate head of government was known as the President of the Cabinet of Ministers under the 1828 constitutions but was renamed the Prime Minister of the Cabinet of Ministers in the current constitution promulgated in 1992.
The initial post of head of government was as the chief chair of cabinet albeit the head of state, the monarch of Marirana, had wide sweeping executive powers that could veto the Prime Minister. Within the cabinet the Prime Minister was seen more as a first amongst equals then the official head of the government. The position was abolished following republican victory in the Mariranan civil war when Marirana became a presidential republic. The abolition of the monarchy saw the post dissolved again until 1992 when it was restored to function as a check on presidential power with the intention being to avoid rule by a strongman president. Since then the Prime Minister acts within the framework of a semi-presidential system.
There has been 20 individuals who has served as head of government with 2 having served non-consecutive terms. The current Prime Minister is Amadeo Tajani who has served in the post since 2018.
