Tonovsk is a landlocked district in Venadia in the Tarmanovy region. It neighbors Akhodka in the north, Venagorod Tysyacha in the west and Liskovsk and Svokin in the south. Tonovsk climate is continental, with warm summers and cold winters, with the north veering into the subarctic climate zone. Several rivers run through Tonovsk, who also possess some smaller lakes in its central areas. It is known as an industrial powerhouse relative to its population, with numerous manufacturing cities in the southern parts of the district, with smog and pollution being a prominent problem.

History

The first organized settlements and states in Tonovsk emerged in the 9th century, during the period of Venadian history known as the Bregeld. Nordic market towns along the Damara and Amaga rivers gave the impetus for the unification of the slavic peoples of Tonovsk, with Vladimir of Tano being made the first Duke of Tonovsk by the nordics. Tonovsk was a troubled region during the Bregeld, with the Duke having difficulty levying tribute from ancestral tribal enemies such as the eastern Ormeni and the southern Dilisk clans.

Tonovsk fell under Venagorod's influence after the end of the Bregeld and fought on their side during the Venadian Wars of Religion and the Vesan Crusades, and after the brief Venagorod-Tano War in 1091 Tonovsk was fully integrated into the Venagorod Republic. Tonovsk was made a Tysyacha with expanded rights and privileges for the native aristocracy in 1221 with the formation of the Venadian Republic.

Tonovsk was the site of several peasant revolts in the 14th and 15th centuries, most prominently the Pakonev Revolt of 1483. These revolts are largely seen as reactions to implementation of more wide-spread serfdom in Tonovsk, and were largely directed at local rulers rather than the Venadian Republic itself. Nevertheless, none of the revolts saw any lasting success and were brutally suppressed.

The tysyacha changed drastically during the 19th century, with the growth and expansion of several factory towns established due to Tonovsk's ideal location by the waterways, the plentiful supplies of coal and power from the rivers and ample room to expand. Cities such as Khasabodny, Dovat and Prolym emerged within decades from sparsely populated villages transformed by industrialization. Particularly the metalworking industries took hold in Tonovsk, along with chemical, furniture, timber and other industries. The growth of the working class and the infamously horrid conditions in Tonovski factories made Tonovsk a leading pioneer of Venadia's socialist movement, which carries well into the modern day.

Politics

Tonovsk is a red district, with the Socialist Party considering it one of its strongholds. The Communist Party and its radical offshot the Worker's Party also enjoy a high degree of support, Tonovsk being one of only two districts where the latter is represented on the local level. Tonovsk is led by a governor and a prince, the former appointed by the state and the latter by the elected regional veche. The Socialist Party lost their clear majority in the regional veche for the first time in decades in 2013, and entered a coalition with the regional Communist Party.

Economy

Industry and manufacturing remains important to the Tonovsk economy, with Tonovsk being the steel capital of Venadia. Automobile manufacturing through the Goromezh Automobile Company is also important to the Tysyacha's economy, with all but one of the company's factories being located in the tysyacha. In recent decades, the service industry has however overtaken the industrial sector as the primary contributor to GDP. Agriculture is important in the south and along the rivers, but Tonovsk's relatively barren soil (not aided by pollution) means that agriculture is relatively less important. Tonovsk has relatively high incomes compared to other Venadian districts, and a strong economy. Unemployment was in 2015 below the national average at 9.1%.
