Big Brother 2022, also known as Big Brother 13, was the fourteenth season of the Hennish version of Big Brother. It was the first season to be broadcast in Hennehouwe in eight years, and the first to be aired on Ster, the successor of Big Brother's original network VTV. The season began with a pre-recorded premiere on 18 September 2022 and concluded with a live final on 11 December 2022. The season lasted 87 days, making it the shortest ever regular season of Big Brother in Hennehouwe.

The premiere and subsequent live episodes were co-hosted by television personalities Stefan Hulleman and Thalia Vlogaert. Live feeds from the house were broadcast 24/7 on ATV+, as well as overnight on Ster.

Production

Big Brother first aired in Hennehouwe on VTV on 1 January 2000. It was the brainchild of television producers Michel D'Hondt and Stijn van der Meulen, founders of Onten Productions B.V, and was named for the eponymous character from the dystopian novel [insert name here] by Estmerish writer [insert name here]. The show was an instant hit, generating high viewing figures and press coverage, as well as criticism and controversy for its perceived voyeuristic and psychological nature. Its success spawned a number of repeat seasons and the format was exported to a number of countries around the world in the following years, becoming one of the most popular international television formats in the world. Big Brother aired on VTV, later renamed Kanaal 6, until 2004 when it was moved to D'Hondt and Onten's own channel, On10, from 2005 until the network's demise in 2007, with a third iteration on Netwerk Groep's channels Net4 and Net7 from 2011 till 2014.

On 15 December 2021, Mediacentre confirmed that Big Brother would return to Hennish television the following year on the channel Ster and streaming service ATV+.

Format

The format of Big Brother 2022 followed that of the original series, with an emphasis on the 'social experiment' aspect of the show's format. The season was dubbed "Terug naar de basis" (Return to the basics) in promotions and throughout its run, with producers promising to reboot the atmosphere and feeling of the first seasons with a modern influence. This was emphasised to shrug off the negative, over-cosmetic image the programme had garnered in its later seasons.

Big Brother features a number of previously-unknown contestants, known as housemates, living together in a specially-constructed house, completely cut off from the outside world. Their actions and interactions are monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by dozens of cameras and microphones, and broadcast to the general public. Each week, they participate in a series of tasks to compete for food, necessities and luxuries. Over a regular period, the housemates are required to nominate one another for possible elimination, with the public voting on which housemates should leave the house. At the end of the season, the public votes for their favourite housemate to be the last housemate standing, thus winning Big Brother and a large cash prize.

House

For the new season, a new house was constructed in the suburban area of Valkeveen on the outskirts of Zilverzee. The house is located on a former sound stage and parking lot of a previously-disused studios. It covers a space of 275 m2 and includes a large garden and challenge area. The house contains 80 cameras and over 120 microphones. For the first time in a Hennish season of Big Brother, there are no manually-operated cameras, with only a limited number of cameras built-in to the infamous one-way mirrors.

Casting

Applications for prospective housemates opened in January 2022, and ran until 31 May 2022. As in previous seasons, applications were open to residents of both Hennehouwe and Kesselbourg. Open-air audition days took place in a number of cities in March and April 2022, including s'Holle, Zilverzee, Kesselbourg City, Emmen, Herxen, Wissel, Middelhoek and Noordland.

Producers hoped to cast a selection of "authentic" housemates from "all backgrounds and statuses", and denied media reports that social media influencers and models would likely be featured among the final cast. In particular, Onten, the show's production company, said that the new season of Big Brother would feature a "highly diverse" group of housemates that varied in age, upbringing, personality and orientation.

Details and images of the initial fifteen housemates were released on 16 September 2022 via social media.

Broadcast

The 90-minute premiere episode aired on Ster at 8:30pm on 18 September 2022, featuring the move-in of the housemates that took place two days prior. From then on, daily highlights episodes aired nightly from Sunday to Thursday each week. Live elimination episodes aired on Friday nights, whilst live nomination episodes began airing from Week 2 on Tuesday nights, directly following the daily highlights show.
