Áine Nic Gille (born 12 March 1984) is a Caldish Liberty Party politician who has served as Second Leas-Cheann Comhairle of Tionól since February 2019. She has served as a Teachta Comhthionól since 2012, first representing the Aerach West constituency and later for the List.

Early and personal life

Nic Gille was born in Clyte in 1984, but is a native of Tarmoncemgan, County of Aerach, a suburb of the city. She studied law at Clyte University. In 2015 she married her partner, Úna Ní Chonaill, who is an estate agent. The two have two children.

Political career

Nic Gille was involved in the Liberty Party's youth league while at university and served in her university chapter's leadership. She entered politics in 2012 after standing as a candidate in the Aerach West constituency. At the time of her election, she was 28 years old and among the youngest members of the Comhthionól Náisiúnta.

She served on several parliamentary committees and later went on to chair the Children and Family Services Subcommittee and then the Education, Family, and Research Committee.

In 2017 she stood as a candidate on the Liberty Party's list and successfully won a seat. Starting in 2017, she was the deputy leader of Liberty's parliamentary group in the Comhthionól. She was promoted to lead the group several months later, but resigned after Proin Casarnach became party leader.

She held her list seat in the 2019 snap election. Afterwards, she was elected as Second Leas-Cheann Comhairle of the Comhthionól. Nic Gille is speculated to have been selected due to her strong parliamentary relationships. She remained in the position after the abolition of the Comhthionól Náisiúnta in 2021. She then assumed the same office in the unicameral Tionól.

In July 2021, she called on Liberty Party leader Pádraig Mac Piarais to step aside after having previously criticized his leadership. She became the senior-most official in the party to call for his resignation.
