The 1988 Salamati Coup d'Etat attempt, which lasted for five days, between September 9 1988 and September 13 1988, was far more intense than the 1983 attempt.

At September 9 1988 at around noon, multiple coordinated soldiers around the country, member from the People's Salamati Resistance Front, took control of their own military barracks, and strategic points of their cities (banks, factories, hospitals, governmental buildings, airports). The rebels created sieges if they couldn't manage to break into the aimed building. Al Kharrabi responded by breaking the siege of his Qasr Muhammadia Residence, of the Presidential House and other strategic points like the Dar Al Hamma-Shahid Airport. The conflicts between rebels and loyalists created scenes of chaos and destruction in most Salamati cities, and about 400 dead during these five days.
