The AFC Nations Cup is an annual international football competition played by the senior men's national teams of the member associations of AFC, the sport's Adulan governing body. The first tournament was held in 1997.
Format
According to the approved format, the AFC national teams are divided into five divisions (called "Federations"): the East (EAFF), the Central (CAFF), the Southeast (SEAFF), the Southwest (SWAFF), and the West (WAFF). In each association, four or five groups were formed and teams played each other both home and away.
Season
Each season of the AFC Nations League is played in a typical AFC competition season format: the league phase (or "group stage") in the first half of the season from June to September, and the knockout phase in the second half of the season in October (quarter finals of League A) and November (semifinals and finals of League A) respectively, meaning a AFC Nations League champion is crowned every year.
Finals
At the end of the regular season, the top two teams in each of the three associations go on to play in the Nations Cup Finals, with the top teams overall granted a bye. This is a sudden-death tournament, with two semi-finals, one third and fourth-place decider, and one final to decide which team becomes the AFC Nations Cup champion.
