Winning song"Bebas" by Muhawarrin Saud

AleziRadio Festival of Songs 1988 is the thirty-first edition of the annual AleziRadio Festival of Songs. The competition was held as usual in 16th of May 1988 by the authorities of Radio Pyalivostok. This is the eighth time that Pyalivostok hosted the competition after doing so previously in 1959, 1962, 1965, 1968, 1970, 1978, and 1985.

The competition was won by Muhawarrin Saud with the song "Bebas" representing Basna. This is the fourth time that Basna won the competition after previously doing so in 1963, 1980, and 1986. This is also the first Basnaharian victory to not happen in Metropolitan Zafizamarrah.

Around that time, the Iliyan Government had been succesfully overthrown by the National Revolution led by Mukhlis Krasnaya Novogrody (who was the son of Aziz Goridagyev Novogrody, who won three times himself representing Pyalivostok). And thus, this competition can be called "The first ARFOS to be held in the Democracy Era"

The successful Revolution resulted in a continuation of last year where many songs that competed contained lyrics celebrating freedom, revolution, peace, and Alezia as a whole. There's also a common theme of Reunification (which won't happen until 2021) even though it's not the main theme, only being mentioned in the lyrics of some entries.

The themes mentioned are also supported due to the fact that 1988 is the year where North Alezia celebrated 30 years of its independence, and also when ARFOS celebrated it's 30 years running in North Alezia. And due to this, there were plans to invite another country to ARFOS to "spice the competition".

At the time, Japan, Indonesia, and Carrelie were put to consideration to be invited to ARFOS. However, the higherups at AleziRadio suggested holding an "Independence Award" instead, where every year, other than an original song, all of them would sing one same Alezian song which would only be graded out of presentation and voice, and where only nine singers would compete instead of the usual 18. The running order itself was decided by AleziRadio in a draw instead of based from last year's ranking. Carrelie would participate next year.

The competition was held in the town of Saint Auron or Sankt-Auvonskovsky in Russian. 20 kilometers away from Pyalivostokgrad, it has a population of 248,389 as of 1989. It was decided to be held in Saint Auron after the city authority of Pyalivostokgrad refused to take the responsibility due to budgetary issues that was happening in the internal of the city council.

Saint Auron did not have any theaters or indoor places, and thus it was decided that the competition was to be held in the Sankt-Auvonskovsky Ice Rink, where a stage would be put on the center with a carpet running from the center to the backstage of the ice rink. The Ice Rink did not have seating, and thus temporary seating of 1,500 people and temporary orchestra pit was made. This is the first time that the competition was held outdoors and the second time that the competition was held in a roofless building after 1961. Even with the initial problems, audience said that the entries were perfectly audible even outdoors.

The interval act for the competition were the Shangri-La Ice Dancers who made headlines at the time after the competition due to the quality of the act surprising viewers. Until this day, the Shangri-La Ice Dancers has been deemed as one of the best interval acts in the AleziRadio Festival of Songs' history.
