Anlaufhafen (/ɑːnlaʊfhɑːfɛn/; Liidurian: Vahesadam, pronounced /wɑːhesædɑːm/; Hytek: Klagausta, pronounced /klɑːgaʊsta/) is a Liidurian city located on the eastern coast of the Gulf of Alemannia. With a population of almost 300,000 in the 2016 census, Anlaufhafen is the sixth-largest city in Liiduria and is the only one located in Alemannia. The city, which is surrounded on three sides by the Republic of Hytekia, has historically been one of the most strategically desirable ports in northern Asura due to its value as a maritime choke point.

The area surrounding the city is known to have been inhabited by Mitrusian peoples as early as 700 CE, when the linguistically divergent Liiduro-Nausikaan speakers first populated the Alemannic coast. Mitrusian villages faced raids from Liidurian mariners during the Early Middle Ages, who later established a number of Liidurian settlements in the region. Anlaufhafen became one of the first cities to join the emergent Sadamic League in 1104, and allowed the League to toll vessels passing in and out of the Gulf of Alemannia, which greatly contributed to its burgeoning wealth.

The Ragucin Empire formed at the end of the 13th century, and moved to curb Liidurian influence in Alemannia by conquering the locations in which the League possessed kontore ("offices"). The Empire introduced harsh taxation on Sadamic operation in areas east of the Strait of Edressder and, most notably, Anlaufhafen (which was the largest sovereign possession of the League in Alemannia at the time) fell to a series of Ragucin attacks in 1337. This led to Sadamic participation in the War of the Aschenbach League, whereafter it regained control of the city.

In 1896, Anlaufhafen was besieged by the Kingdom of Hytekojuznia

Etymology

The name Anlaufhafen is a word in Standard Alemannic meaning "port of call". It is a literal translation of the Liidurian Vahesadam, which was a colloquial term for many settlements established by the Sadamic League between the 12th and 16th centuries, and persists today as the native name for the city.
