Arimathea (pronounced /ærɪmæˈθeɪæ/), also called the City of Arimathea (Trellinese: Forsi Arimathëka) or Arimathea City, is the capital of the Grand Duchy of Arimathea, a sovereign dependency of Trellin. With an urban population exceeding 8 million, it is a primate city and the second largest city in the Trellinese Empire. It is home to the national government and the grand ducal family and is the administrative seat of the Serëforz (Capital) district.
The city is located on the estuary of the Kaedroth river, where it flows into the Great Bay of Arimathea. The natural harbour formed by the Kaedroth houses the Port of Arimathea, one of the most important ports in western Astyria and, covering over 10,000 hectares (100 km2), the largest in the empire. The lower Kaedroth is a very wide river, even after it spreads into its many channels at Tythim, and is spanned by only three road traffic bridges within Arimathea's city limits. Before the twentieth century, the vast majority of cross-river traffic was carried on ferries, and there remain many ferry crossing points along the river. For historical reasons, most of the city's development has been restricted to the Kaedroth's southern bank: only one of the nine municipalities within the Serëforz district is on the north bank. As the largest city in the north of the empire, Arimathea has long been an important economic hub and population centre. It is the centre of a major industrial region, with a strong export base to Trellin and the west of Astyria. The city is served by multiple airports and airfields, including the commercial airports Arimathea City Airport, Teqial Jureniv Airport and Kaedroth Valley Airport.
History
Prior to 308 AD, Arimathea was named Fürzarmad, and was at that time the capital of Harimat. Its lord converted to Christianity when missionaries reading Gospel verses mentioned Joseph of Arimathea, whose name was strikingly similar to his own: Josev of Harimat. The name of the city and state were both changed at the same time.
