The Atrescan Senate (Atrescan: Senato Etresciano) is the primary unicameral legislative body of Atresca. It consists of 436 members, each elected in separate constituencies (called "districts" in Atresca) using a first-past-the-post system. The Senate meets at the Casa del Senato in the capital city of Albasini. It is currently in its 67th session since its foundation in 1858. Members of the Senate are known as Senators and use the title Senatore for males and Senatrice for females.
The Senate's 436 members, including the Prime Minister but excluding the Speaker, who is an independent, are elected every four years. In the exception that a Senator passes or resigns whilst in office, by-elections are held to fill the position, usually completed within a month of the incumbent's departure. Members of the Senate are affiliated with a political party and often a governing or opposing coalition, usually representing the right-left ideological split in the Senate.
The Senate is often referred to as one of Asura's most traditional legislatures, with a series of pre-convening and post-convening protocols that are observed by all sitting members, most notably the playing of the national anthem before and after every session. The Atrescan Senate coordinates with the Valdinian Senate, the devolved administration of the Valdinas Islands. The Valdinas make up ten of the Atrescan Senate's seats, with Troping also having one.
