The Belhavian presidential election of 2004 was the 49th quadrennial presidential election. It was held on Tuesday, November 2nd, 2004. The Conservative nominee, former Vice-President Jeff Arnoth of Rustonia, and his running mate, Governor Avi Blackman of Freeport, were elected to a term as President and Vice-President, defeating the Liberal Democratic nominee, Vice-President Aaron Rappaport of Shelvoy , and his running mate, Senator Benjamen Bar-Lev of Kellsmont. The election was unique in the competitive three-way race that emerged with Libertarian nominee, Governor Yosef Rossman of South Dakos, winning over 8% of the national vote, as well as several provinces and territories, a historic first for the third-party.
Background
Voting System
The president and the Senate is elected through a plurality majority popular vote by eligible, registered voters in a first-past-the-post electoral system.
Campaign and Issues
Results
On November 2nd, 2004, with a record low 46% turnout, Arnoth beat both opponents by wide margins, scoring a ten-point margin over the Lib Dem, Rappaport, 51%-41%, with the Libertarian, Rossman, behind with 8%, a record vote total for the Libertarians in a presidential election. The Conservative Vice-President won 12 provinces and 1 Crown Territory, compared to Kommen's 8 provinces and no territories, and Libertarian Rossman's record 5 provinces and 4 territories.
The competitive three-way race upended several political trends. Arnoth, because Rossman peeled away Lib Dem-leaning liberal libertarian voters from Rappaport, was able to narrowly win both East Dakos and Braunswig, which are usually Lib Dem bastions. However, Rappaport edged out Arnoth to win Provisa because Rossman's strong vote share among the city-province's libertarians - who usually vote Tory - voted for Rossman instead, allowing Rappaport to win the capital city-province by a hair of less than 5,000 votes.
The Rossman libertarian surge allowed the Tory Arnoth to win swing province West Dakos by a strong 6.5% margin, when the parties usually very narrowly split the provincial vote there. Rossman took nearly 38% of Westland's vote, a Tory stronghold, displacing the Lib Dems there as the second-highest vote-getter after the Conservatives.
Rossman swept the colonies and 5 rural Tory stronghold provinces - South Dakos, Arkania, Raffen, Weissland Islands, and South Adrania - each which has a provincial population of less than a million residents. However, Rossman only won plurality majorities in all but South Dakos (a libertarian-leaning Tory stronghold), where he did not exceed 45%, except for winning 52% of South Dakos. He won the crown territories of Southern Thule (<400,000 residents), New Shelvoy by turning out the Alleghanian vote, the Ross Archipelagos, and the Libertarian stronghold of the J.A.T.
Arnoth won the Orthodox Jewish vote decidedly.
