The Chŏnsŏ J288 is a type of 5-ton 6×6 medium utility lorry produced in Menghe. It was the Menghean Army's main medium utility lorry during the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, though it has since been supplemented and replaced by the Samsan S915. In addition to its basic cargo and personnel flatbed variant, the J288 also comes in tanker, dump lorry, semi-trailer, and container carrier variants, as well as a wide array of specialty models for specialty combat and engineering roles. It has also enjoyed some success on the civilian market as an offroad cargo vehicle and combination bus.

Description

The Chŏnsŏ J288 has a conventional engine-forward layout with two wheels under the engine and four under the rear chassis, all powered. In terms of its overall appearance, it resembles the Letnian Ural-4320, but differs in the placement of the headlights (on the grill rather than the sides) and the shape of the hood (more angular). On most early models, the muffler and exhaust pipe are located under the cab, while the air filter and air intake are located behind it on the left. On some newer models, the muffler and exhaust are also behind the cab to improve fording performance. Most models carry a spare tire behind the cab on the right. There is space in the cab for two passengers, one on the right and one in the center. The driver sits on the left, though some one-off export models marketed to Dayashina and other left-side-driving countries put the driver on the right.

Production

The J288 is manufactured by Chŏnsŏ Automotive, a division of the corporate Chŏnsŏ Group. Chŏnsŏ Automotive was originally a state-owned enterprise, but it was partially privatized in 1998, with the Menghean government retaining a large minority share. It is produced at Chŏnsŏ's main factory in the city of Winam, west of the Wichŏn river, which gave the company its name. Low-rate production of the J288 continues today, though mainly for export customers or to refurbish existing vehicles.

Variants

  • Chŏnsŏ J284 - Shortened 4×4 variant with a smaller flatbed. Relatively uncommon in military service.
  • Chŏnsŏ J286 - Shortened 6×6 variant with space for the J284's flatbed.
    • Chŏnsŏ J286-4 - Semi-trailer hauler with a trailer mounting point.
  • Chŏnsŏ J288-0 - Designation for the basic chassis cab of the J288; used in manufacturing special variants.
    • Chŏnsŏ J288-1 - Standard flatbed variant with folding benches on the sides of the bed. The flatbed can carry 16 passengers without modification, or 24 with the installation of a central bench.
    • Chŏnsŏ J288-2 - Variant with mounting points for a hard-shell module behind the cab. This vehicle is used as the basis for mobile command posts, large field kitchens, water purification stations, SIGINT posts, and drone control stations, among many other roles.
    • Chŏnsŏ J288-3 - Variant with a 5,000-L capacity liquid storage tank. Usually used to carry fuel.
  • Chŏnsŏ J290 - 6×6 variant with a lengthened chassis.
    • Chŏnsŏ J290-1 - Stretched flatbed capable of carrying up to 12 tons of cargo or 24 passengers (36 with central bench).
    • Chŏnsŏ J290-2 - Has mounting points for a 20-foot ISO container. Uncommon in military use.
    • Chŏnsŏ J290-4 - Lengthened cab with an extra row of seating for three additional passengers, plus space for the standard hardshell or flatbed modules used by the baseline J286.
    • Chŏnsŏ J290-41 - Sleeper cab based on the cab of the J290-4, with two bunks in the cab rear. Seen in some long-range strategic logistics units, but overall uncommon.
