The Chancellor of Sydalon is the de facto head of government of the Kingdom of Sydalon. Though the office of Chancellor of Sydalon has existed in various forms since 1237. The longest serving Chancellor in this period was Belandra de Magro, Lady de Magro, who served from 1975 until 1992 for a total 17 years; the shortest official term was held by Adeodata Saabi, who served for three months from October 2017 until January 2018.

Constitutionally, the Chancellor is the deputy president of the Council of Ministers and the chief officer of the Haute Court. The Chancellor is appointed by the Monarch and serves at the Monarch's pleasure.

Functions

As the Monarch maintains the role of head of state and government, the Chancellor is primarily charged with the task of carrying out the Monarch's orders. Historically, the Chancellor was also referred to as the Chief Minister or First Secretary and would often govern in the Monarch's absence or lack of official regency. The Chancellor is ex offico the Chief Minister, leads Her Majesty's Civil Service, assists the Monarch in formulating and implementing policies, and plays a role in the administration of the courts.

The office is one of great influence over the Monarch. He or she is a leading member of the Haute Cour and its sub-councils, including the Council of Ministers. Ministers on the Council of Ministers are not appointed by the Chancellor, but by the Monarch. Often times these appointments come at the recommendation of the Chancellor, but there is no Constitutional obligation for the Monarch to seek advice from a Chancellor before appointing Ministers.

Eligibility

The Chancellor is appointed by, and serves at the pleasure of, the Monarch. While members of the nobility are most often appointed, any individual, traditionally a resident of Sydalon, is eligible to serve as Chancellor. If the officeholder is not a member of the nobility, he or she is considered a Noble of the Robe. Since the early 19th century, any non-title holding individual, noble or otherwise, that served as Chancellor was created a hereditary knight during or after their tenure in office.
