The Changgok Chk-14 is a twin turboshaft engine, Anikatian multi-purpose military helicopter developed by the Changgok Design Bureau. Originally intended as a utility craft for both civil and naval usage, military interest led to the development of both battlefield and naval variants. The Chk-14 went into operational usage in the early 1980s and was later adopted by the armed forces of various nations, primarily serving in the battlefield utility, anti-armour, search and rescue and anti-submarine warfare roles. It has been in continuous production since 1978, with the latest variants seeing significant upgrades to the avionics and flight systems, improved engines, glass cockpits, increased fuel capacity; and aerial refuelling.

History

The initial design work began in the mid-1960s as a replacement for existing outdated helicopter designs. The helicopter was developed primarily the navy to be used for ferrying and anti-submarine warfare. However the design proved very promising and the air force ordered a number of variants. The first prototype flew in 10 June 1978, but it would not enter service til 1981 by which time the new socialist government had taken power. It was intended to replace the decade-old designs on ships and carriers, it was chosen for it's compact design due to the requirements of fitting in small hangar spaces.

Design

The Chk-14 is a multi-purpose twin-engine battlefield helicopter. It has a co-axial rotor, removing the need for a tail rotor. The helicopter has a tall, compact profile shape to meet the Navy's requirement for transporting aboard a its ships. It can carry 16 troops with equipment, lift 4,000 kg (8,818 lb) of cargo internally or externally by sling. The Chk-14 can be equipped with stub wings at the top of fuselage to carry fuel tanks or various armaments.

Advanced Anti-submarine warfare and utility variant with entirely new avionics, improved engines, cockpit significantly updated with a full glass cockpit and air-to-air refueling.
