Constituent States of Ossoria

The High Kingdom of Ossoria is a federal monarchy consisting of 17 constituent states: ten Kingdoms, four Principalities, one Republic, one Confederacy, and one City-state. The majority of these states are found within the Ossorian Home Islands in the northern Nuadan Ocean, with the remainder comprising the Outlying Territories and are located in various parts of the Nuadan Ocean, the Salacian Ocean, and the Silent Sea.

Politics

According to the accepted reading of the treaties which form the legal foundation of the High Kingdom, the States and the High Kingdom are each sovereign jurisdictions, with their own internal legal codes, royal families, legislatures, courts, and defense forces. These treaties delineate the areas of authority ceded and retained by the two levels of government and have been periodically updated and revised over the centuries to reflect changes in society as well as domestic and international circumstances. Each state is entitled to equal representation in the House of Keys, its nobles sit in the House of Lords, and its residents are represented in the House of Commons.

New states may be added to the High Kingdom in one of two ways: a foreign entity may be annexed or request annexation, which requires the approval of Parliament and the Monarch; or an existing State may release part of its territory from its jurisdiction, which requires no federal approval. Since the establishment of the High Kingdom in 827 CE, the number of constituent states has expanded from the original eight Kingdoms to the current total of 17 states, with each new state being admitted on an equal footing with the existing states.
