The Emmerian Armed Forces are tasked with defending the United Kingdom of Emmeria from foreign threats and aggression, while also contributing to peacekeeping, humanitarian and disaster-relief efforts. The armed forces consist of three main service branches: the Emmerian Army, Royal Emmerian Navy (REN) and Royal Emmerian Air Force (REAF). Two sub-branches, the Royal Emmerian Marines (REM) and Royal Emmerian Space Corps (RESC), are independent but nominally under Navy and Air Force control respectively.

Since the end of the Second Global War, its principal adversary has been the armed forces of Yuktobania.

In 2019 Emmeria spent a total of $302.2 billion on defense, equivalent to 3.35% of GDP. Emmeria has 683,700 active military personnel and 864,200 reserve personnel. Due to consistent investment in training, equipment and technology, along with the world's second largest economy (behind Osea) and third largest defense budget (behind Osea and Yuktobania), Emmeria possesses one of the most powerful armed forces in Altereal.

History

Today

Command Organization

As Sovereign and Head of State, Queen Catherine IV is the Head of the Emmerian Armed Forces and Commander in Chief. Long-standing constitutional convention, however, has vested de facto executive authority, by the exercise of Royal Prerogative powers, in the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State for Defence, and the Prime Minister (acting with the support of the Cabinet) makes the key decisions on the use of the armed forces.

The Ministry of Defence is the Government department and highest level of military headquarters charged with formulating and executing defence policy for the armed forces.

The Chief of the Defence Staff is the professional head of the armed forces and is an appointment that can be held by a Fleet Admiral, Marshal of the Air Force or Field Marshal. Those who are appointed to the position of CDS are elevated to the most senior rank in their respective service (a 5-star rank). The CDS, along with the Permanent Under Secretary, are the principal advisers to the departmental minister.

The three main services have their own respective professional chiefs: the First Sea Lord, the Chief of the General Staff and the Chief of the Air Staff, all currently held by 4-star generals, admirals and air chief marshals. The Marines and Space Corps are headed by 3-star officers due to their smaller size and position under the Navy and Air Force.

The Emmerian Army (established in 1560) is the largest branch of the Emmerian Armed Forces, with 387,700 active and 722,200 reserve personnel. It is formed around highly trained active (regular) forces, with reserve forces to be called up in military emergencies.

The army operates 3,150 tanks, 9,913 armored fighting vehicles, over 5,500 artillery pieces and 1,431 helicopters. Its personnel and equipment are organised into three active corps and seven territorial command districts, which are divided into divisions and brigades. There are a total of 11 active divisions (4 armored, 3 mechanized, 1 mountain, 1 airborne and 1 air assault) and the 7 territorial command districts (divided into brigades, regiments and district defense commands) assume the role of divisions in wartime. 11 active and 7 reserve combat aviation brigades support land forces at the corps level.

The Royal Emmerian Marines (established in 1664) is the amphibious warfare force of the Emmerian Armed Forces, with 39,500 active and 10,100 reserve personnel. As the second largest marine force in the world, it is organized into 2 Marine Expeditionary Forces and 3 security battalions, deployed in the marine sectors of REN naval bases. While nominally independent, it closely cooperates with, and in wartime is commanded by, the Royal Emmerian Navy.

Royal Emmerian Marines training and doctrine is similar to that of the OMC, focusing on physical and mental fitness, the ability to achieve objectives in small groups, and potential operations on foreign shores. Along with airborne and special forces, the is usually the first ground force to be deployed for foreign interventions.

The REM operates similar land equipment to the Emmerian Army, and also operates various fixed-wing, tilt-rotor and rotary-wing aircraft. REM troop contingents protect ports and embark on REN amphibious warfare ships, and REM pilots operate from both Naval Air Stations and the decks of amphibious assault ships or aircraft carriers.

The Royal Emmerian Space Corps (established 1985) is the space operations force of the Emmerian Armed Forces, with 8,400 active and 3,800 reserve personnel. It operates the FORESIGHT series of reconnaissance satellites, along with the GSN satellite navigation network. Space Corps personnel regularly work alongside their counterparts at the Emmerian Space Agency (ESA), and some of the ESA's manned missions involve deploying military payloads. The Space Corps has experimented in recent years with anti-satellite missiles and unmanned space-based weapons platforms, in response to the militarization of space by other major powers such as Yuktobania, Osea and the FCU.
