California, officially the Empire of California or Californian Empire (Californian: Imperío d'California) is a sovereign nation located in Western Merica. It is bordered by Oregunju to the north, Deseret to the east; and Dinétah and Sonora to the southeast. It shares a naval border with the Bruderthaler Mennonite Communes and the Cartelo Trade Zone. With around 50 million people, over #### square kilometers (#### square miles) of land, California is one of the largest nations on Continental Merica accounting for population and geographic area. It is the fourth largest nation on the continent by size, after Alaska, the Saskatchekhanate, and Norumbega. California is primarily an urban and a coastal society, with rugged interiors primarily consisting of mountains and deserts, and the majority of it's population lives in cities and large towns in and around it's coastlines or interior Central Sea. In the deserts and mountains, with few exceptions, the population density sharply drops, with smaller settlements or the occasional large town being the only source of relatively large population for miles. It is a constitutional monarchy, with a ruling Queen, Augustina Diamandis, and a Parliament dominated by various political parties. The largest city in California, as well as it's capitol, is Victorville, part of the larger Victorville-Palmdale metropolitan area. The nation is known for it's diversity in ethnic groups, languages, and religions. California's borders encompass the pre-Collapse state of California, as well as all remaining parts of the Mexican states of Baja California and Baja California del Sur, as well as the majority of the American states of Arizona, and parts of Utah, Oregon, and Nevada.

Prior to the arrival of Spanish colonists, California was home to various Native American tribes who formed local polities before being conquered and colonized by the Spanish Empire beginning loosely in the 1500s and 1600s, with official Spanish outposts coming later on in the later half of the 18th century. After Mexico gained independence from Spain, California would spend around 20 years as a possession of Mexico, before an influx of American settlers and colonists came to the area in the 1830s and 1840s, overthrowing the local Mexican government and then willingly joining the United States after the conclusion of the Mexican American war. While terms between the two countries remained tense for the decades after, most of California and it's northern possessions would remain within the United States, forming the majority of the culture of the West Coast and American Southwest. California became one of the most, if not the most, powerful states in the entire United States, with a massive economy and cultural pull, dominating large swaths of American culture and economics for decades. During the later part of the 20th century, California experienced a rapid and massive cultural transformation, largely caused by native cultural changes within the United States (many of which originated in California) and large amounts of immigration from all over the world. These rapid changes, combined with political corruption and political instability, climate change, and economic downturns would lead to the collapse of the United States during it's Second Civil War. This conflict would largely destroy California through social instability and parts of the state attempting to secede -- initially from California, and then later the United States as a whole. California is largely credited to helping destroy part of the Gilead Compact, a radical Christian fundamentalist group, by aiding Texan forces against them and providing logistical support before the strains of America's collapse became too much for it to handle. In 2049, years after the end of the hot period of the Second American Civil War, California was home to various amounts of local states vying for control, before most were wiped out in the wake of the Great Collapse due to collapsing supply lines. In spite of this, the majority of California, sans for nuclear detonations in Los Angeles and San Francisco, was largely unscathed by the resulting clouds of radioactive volcanic ash due to the general easterly flow of the jet stream.

Following the Great Collapse, the modern Empire of California was formed by an alliance of surviving technocrats, local military leaders, and social elites in the late 2070s around Victorville. Appointing Christopher Toosk, the leader of the most powerful armed group in southern California at the time as their leader, the Victorville alliance rapidly conquered the majority of former California and it's surrounding territories before Toosk's death in the Battle of Eugene against Cascadian forces. After the death of Toosk, California largely slowed down it's expansion, even ceding a large part of it's northern territories to Oregunju in an effort to create a buffer zone between California and Cascadia. Despite this, California remained a large regional power and largely dominated most of the neighboring states through cultural influence and trade power. The current ruling dynasty, the Diamandis, have origins in the pre-Collapse Hollywood and music industry scene, coming to power in 2205 during a brief succession crisis. The current Imperatríz, Augustina, was crowned in 2323. The Spíkar of Parliament is Ferdinand Williams, a member of the Californian Party for Progress (Californian: Partydo for Progreso), which has dominated Californian party politics since 2190.

California has been a leading global center of culture, reform, social progress, and more, with it making massively influential contributions to art, sciences, industry, and philosophy both pre-Collapse and post-Collapse. California is largely considered to be the dominant power on the west coast, having significant cultural, military, economic, and political influence. It is a developed nation with a high standard of living, and Californians enjoy one of the highest qualities of life on the continent. It preforms above average in international rankings of healthcare, education, life expectancy, and human development. California is a member of the Forum for International Dialogue, and the Merican Union, joining in 2219 and 2299, being a founding member of the MU.
