Free Gylias (French: Gylias Libre) is a Gylian newspaper, founded in 1942. It is published by the Anarchist Federation, and is Gylias' largest anarchist publication.
History
It was originally established in 1942 as Free Territories. It became the main outlet of the new Anarchist Federation, and gradually expanded during the Liberation War by mergers with other small anarchist publications.
During the transition from the Free Territories to Gylias, it changed its name to Free Gylias. It followed a broadly independent left line during the Golden Revolution, critical of the Darnan Cyras government's change to a withering away of the state stance. It became one of Gylias' highest-circulation newspapers, and uniquely the largest explicitly anarchist daily newspaper in Tyran.
It was a vocal opponent of the Aén Ďanez government during the wretched decade, and harshly criticised the Decleyre Summit and Social Partnership Program. The 1990s saw it adopt new technology such as digital printing, establish its website, and digitise its archives through BiblioNet.
Profile
Its political orientation is anarchist, with a focus on synthesis anarchism. It serves as a forum for broader political debates within the AF/FA.
Its motto, Ni dieux, ni césar, ni tribun ("No gods, no Caesar, no tribune"), is quoted from "The Internationale".
The newspaper is known for its highly austere traditional layout, with no photographs on the title page. It focuses more on anarchist interpretation of current events than maximum news coverage. It has a "labour" section instead of an "economy" section, a development subsequently imitated by many Gylian newspapers. Its culture section features commentary on works rather than conventional reviews.
It is infamous for its house style, characterised by avoidance of jargon and staunch anarchist framing, such as using soi-disant and scare quotes around "elected" when describing foreign officeholders, and cynical humour in describing monarchies as "inbred" or "incestuous".
It publishes editions in English, French, and Gylic, with the latter edition using the various Gylic languages based on the native language of the respective writer or region referred to in the story.
Ownership and organisation
