The Greater Kingdom of Blostland or Greater Blostland was the former Government of Blostland between 1923 and 1934 during the rule of Järnflotten and the Functionalist dictator Karl Åberg.
During the rule of Åberg Blostland would be transformed into a Functionalist dictatorship with him and the then King, Oscar I as absolute rulers. The “Greater” in the name “Greater Blostland” is in reference to Åberg’s foreign policy of Ett lopp or “One Race” in which it’s claimed that Blostland is the heir of the First North Sea Empire and therefore all nations in the North Sea are Blostlandic in origin. Järnflotten would gain significant popularity in the Riksdag after the Black Month but would only gain a majority after creating a coalition with the Kungars krets, this would last only a year after Åberg’s accession to Prime Minister as Åberg would initiate emergency powers in the face of left wing unrest, most of Åberg’s enemies including many in the Kungars krets would purged in this time.
1923 election
Prelude to the election
Preceding the election of 1923 Blostland was in an age of cultural depression, the populace had lost all hope of restoring the once mighty Kingdom of Blostland, as the lackluster rule of the Kungars krets for over 20 years had left all but mundane corporate slavery for the average Blostlander. This depression would eventually lead to the political climate that allowed for the rise of Järnflotten and Functionalism. Blostland, while having a strong labor movement was still majority conservative, the farmer and business classes had essentially monopolized the political system that was born after the Vallmo Uprising creating this new aristocracy that had for a while, kept the peace. The lower class and the growing middle class however began to despise the Kungars krets and their new aristocracy, corruption and favoritism plagued the party and by 1923 it was pretty much an open secret with events such as the expulsion of Magnus Sandell from Riksdag and the passing of multiple tax cuts for billionaires & farmers making massive headlines when they occurred a few years prior.
Järnflotten
Functionalism had reached Blostland around 1919, the ideology, while originally being considered something only the Gaullophiles enjoyed, would quickly expand outside its niche community after writer, Börje Östlund, translated much of the founding texts of Functionalism into Blostlandic. Only a year later Valter Hansdotter, a founding member of Järnflotten and a close associate of Åberg, would start a Functionalist reading club in Raudrena’s Salon district, Often called the “Barracks” because of its high number of soldier participants the club would attract many lower class members of society who were unsatisfied with the Kungars krets and too nationalistic for Vallmoparti. It’s on August 11th 1920 that Hansdotter would meet Åberg, they would quickly become friends and start to swap their opinions on Functionalist theories over their famous early 20’s dinners. Åberg would eventually become the rising star of the Barracks, his interpretation of Functionalism kept much of its root principles but also allowed wiggle room for certain elements popular in Blostland at the time such as Pagan Revivalism. On November 9th 1920 Åberg and Hansdotter would found Järnflotten, named after the famous iron raft of the first Blostlandic King, the party’s founding charter would explicitly call out the actions of Kungars krets and Vallmoparti as being reasons for its founding.
The black month
Starting in February 1921 the Black Month was a series of protests by Vallmoparti and the BSAI against the government and rise of right wing sentiment in the countryside. Organized originally by the Blostlandic National Union as a general strike Vallmoparti and BSAI would quickly take over control of the strikes direction, organizing hundreds of men all over the country to participate in the strike even while being unemployed or not a worker at that site. Government ineptitude would make efforts to stop the strike ineffective and by the start of February the protests would be under way, almost immediately after the protests began fighting between the police and the protesters would also begin. The police suffering from lack of funds and discipline because of years of corruption would be outnumbered by the sheer number of protesters organized, a number of towns would see police run out or even defect. In response conservatives in the government would announce military involvement, secretly Åberg would organize his force of veteran fighters, bearing Järnflotten iconography they would bring military grade weapons into the streets aiding the police in finally ending the violence. Åberg and Hansdotter would be arrested for arming a rebellion against the government’s wishes, Åberg would quickly become a national hero for the far right and growing centrist crowd. The government would be unable to touch Åberg as local judges and the King himself would urge for a light jail sentence, Järnflotten not long after would see a massive increase in membership stealing from the sinking ship that was Kungars krets.
1923 election
By 1923 Järnflotten had nearly tripled in size and was fast approaching 200,000 members, while this did improve their chances in the election they were still outnumbered by Vallmoparti and were fighting for members with Kungars krets. It was around March of that year that Åberg would have his first meeting with the King. King Oscar I was young and extremely passionate yet disliked by most people for his inaction, Oscar had become increasingly outspoken about his distaste for the Kungars krets and his first meeting with Åberg had piqued his interest in Functionalism. With the election around the corner Oscar would organize a series of meetings to get the conservative establishment to vote for Åberg, Åberg would even leave Järnflotten to run on a “united right ticket” when election season finally arrived Järnflotten militants and conservatives would disrupt pole stations causing chaos within the left as Vallmoparti would attempt to maintain their electoral policy while the BSAI would immediately go underground. Åberg would become Prime Minister with a slight majority over Vallmoparti, the news would ignite protests and violence but it was too little too late as with his power Åberg would begin to transform the Kingdom into a Functionalist dictatorship.
