Groonbank, officially the Province of Groonbank (Azmaran: Ryk âb Groonbank) and sometimes referred to as Greenbank in Estmerish, is one of the eight provinces of Azmara. It is located in the central south of the country, bordering the provinces of Ostlaak to the northwest, Aalmsted and Westmaark to the north, Haadland to the east, Hytklif to the southeast, Sompland to the south and the Borish yend of Maynes-Yord to the southwest. As of the 2013 census, it is Azmara's most populous province, with a population of 2,531,928.
Groonbank's formation can be traced to the 1075 division of the Western March, with the Duchy of Groonbank being created from the portion of the country to the southwest of the Bojner river, excluding eastern parts of modern-day Groonbank and including Sompland and Ostlaak. This state would ultimately reunite with the Western March in 1238, yet would retain autonomous structures and its territorial holdings would evolve to its current boundaries over the course of this personal union, with the Duchy consisting of roughly its modern borders during the Confederation and Kingdom of Azmara eras. The modern province, however, is traced to the standardisation of provincial borders and the abolition of the Duchy after the 1855 Revolution.
The province is highly densely populated and contains a significant portion of the Bojnersteden conurbation of central Azmara, of which its two largest settlements, Jorś-Hylager and Ryksby, are often considered to be part of. The third-largest settlement, Mideltuun, serves as the capital of the province and is the location of the Ryksmot, the province's legislature. The modern-day province supports a high-tech services based economy, with a significant number of startups in the technology sector.
