The Hellonian crown (Hellonian: Kᚱᛟᛟᚾ, Ellandic: Kᚱᛟᚾᚨ; sign: ₭; code: HLK) has been the currency of the Hellonian Realm since 1808. It is one of the largest currencies on Ullar, used throughout the entire Hellonian Realm. Authority over the currency lies in the hands of the Realm Bank of Hellona, the central bank which sets the monetary policy for the entire Hellonian Realm. Banknotes and coins are issued by printers in each constituent state, which while having a different design in each country, must conform to guidelines laid down by the central bank. One Hellonian crown is subdivided into a hundred pennings. Nowadays only the 20 and 50 penning coins are still minted, with the Realm Bank planning to remove them from circulation at the end of the 1950s.
It was pegged together with the various other currencies used by the Vismar region in the Vismar Monetary Union. All currencies were made to be the same value with the introduction of a unit of equal worth in all currencies. Slowly the values moved to each other until they were tied to each other officially in 1890. The abolition of the first Vismar Union would not lead to the end of the monetary union, which was only officially abolished in 1940. When the Second Vismar Union was established two years later, the decision was made to not reestablish the monetary union. From 1940 the individual currencies were allowed to grow apart.
History
Before the unification of Hellona, several regional currencies circulated in the different parts of contemporary Hellona. The currency of Andus, which was also referred to as crowns, became the basis of the unified monetary system of the new Hellonian kingdom.
When Hellona joined the Trident Union in 1857, plans were created to establish a global currency. Eventually, these proposals would lead to the creation of the Trio, which was to be used by all countries within the Empire. Hellona switched to the trio in 1880 in accordance with new agreements on imperial monetary policy. Hellonian crown banknotes and coins remained legal tender for another two years, during which the exchange rate was pegged to the trio.
The reintroduction of the crown occurred in 1905, when the three countries in the Vismar Union, Hellona, Nambalonia and the USGS decided to leave the trio and form a new monetary union. Each country reestablished their own national currency, although tied to each other with a fixed exchange rate. The decision to leave the trio was due to the mistreatment of the currency by economically weaker nations. The introduction of a global currency also proved difficult due to the different economic stimuli needed in each country. The weak trio would lose its value over time, giving way to uncertainty in many nations. The Hellonian crown, together with the other currencies used in the Vismar Union, were collectively referred to as the Vismar crown due to their unified policy. In 1940 the countries agreed to dissolve the monetary union.
