The Hyō-class guided missile cruiser is a class of guided missile cruisers constructed for the United States of the Tao Navy (USTN), and operated by the Imperial Taoist Navy (ITN). The Hyō class is a much larger and improved version of the ITN's Okami class destroyer.
Development
In a 1999 report, the Chancellory of Defense announced that it was going to include another 2 guided missile destroyers in addition to the original 4 Okami, with the possibility of creating a new class. In 2002, this number was increased to 8, and the new class was confirmed to be a cruiser rather than a destroyer.
The Hyō class is fundamentally an improved and scaled-up version of the Okami-class destroyers. The class features large accommodation and the ships are capable of flexible operation. One of the most obvious changes is an additional hangar to carry up to one helicopter.
In 2017, the UST formally began the construction of two new Hyō ships. The two new vessels are expected to be commissioned in 2020 and 2021, and supposedly have upgrades compared to the base class.
Compared to most of their counterparts, the Hyō classes have 96 vertical launch silos (VLS) compared to the usual 64, can defend against a broad spectrum of threats to a task force in addition to themselves, and are built to accommodate future upgrades.
