The Imperial Armed Forces are the unified military force of Belhavia. The military organization consists of six armed services (in order of precedence): Imperial Army, Imperial Navy, Imperial Air Force, Imperial Marine Corps, Imperial Home Guard, and the Special Operations Force. The Imperial military is headquartered in the Ministry of War Headquarters, located in the Government District, Provisa. The Imperial armed forces were formed on March 3rd, 1715 after the Kingdom of Belhavia was succeeded by the Empire of Belhavia, the military organization itself a successor to the old King's Royal Army.
The military is overseen by civilian oversight with a provision for emergency military rule by the invocation of Protocol 1A by either His Majesty the Emperor or the President in the Imperial Constitution. Until the 8th Amendment in 1943, the Emperor was the formal commander-in-chief; after this, the President was declared Supreme Commander and made de facto formal commander-in-chief on a daily basis. The President is responsible for appointing the leadership of the Ministry of War, an executive Imperial department that is the primary organization by which military policy is carried out. It is headed by the Minister of War, a civilian member of Cabinet who nevertheless is by tradition a former high-ranking military officer, who serves as second-in-command of the Imperial military. The Chairman of the Imperial General Staff is third-in-line to commanding the military.
The General Staff is an advisory organization that coordinates with flag officers from all six service branches in the Imperial armed forces. Under the General Staff is Imperial Military Command (HIGHCOM), the military committee that directly creates military strategy and oversees active commands across the military.
The Imperial Armed Forces were the direct successors of the King's Royal Army, with a new name and uniform the only difference from what came before. With the evolution of military strategy, tactics, and technology in the late 18th century and early 19th century, the armed forces underwent significant changes in structure, organization, weaponry, and leadership. With the emergence of the Cold War and the Galarian Autocracy, the Imperial military has been reorganized into its present form to be a powerful and highly effective fighting force.
The Belhavian military is, like many modern militaries, an all-volunteer professional force. The military is one of the most highly-regarded institutions in Belhavia, alongside the monarchy; a military career is respected and bestows social prestige on those that serve. A conscription law was abolished in 1946 after the fall of the Galarian autocracy. There are approximately 911,000 personnel in active service, c. 2015. The Imperial armed forces spend about $350 billion annually to fund its military forces, which is approximately 5.01% of the Empire's gross domestic product (GDP). The military is an advanced technological force that is well-equipped, well-trained, and well-supplied with significant capabilities in defending the Empire's national defense, national security, as well as the ability to display power projection across the world.
