The Imperial Army of Belhavia, also referred to alternately as the Imperial Belhavian Army or simply the Belhavian Army, is a branch of the Imperial armed forces responsible for land-based military operations. It is one of the six service branches. The Army is the largest branch of the military in terms of personnel, and it is headquartered in the Imperial War Ministry HQ, Government District, Provisa.
The Imperial Army dates back to the old King's Royal Army of the Kingdom of Belhavia period; when Belhavia became an empire in early 1715 after winning the Great Southern War, the Kings Army was renamed as the Imperial Army.
The Army is split into two parts: the Regular Army (active force) and the Army Reserve (reserve force). The Regular Army consists of full-time professional soldiers on active duty. The Army Reserve is compromised of part-time, semi-professional soldiers on reserve duty. The Army Reserve shares resources and training with the Imperial National Guard.
The Army's duties and responsibilities include "the organization, preparation, and maintenance of armed formations during both peacetime and conflict, to fight and win wars and armed conflicts, to mount effective and efficient invasions against hostile opponents, and defend the national and security interests of the Empire." It also includes "maintaining operational superiority over the land for the full use of all necessary and proper military strategies, tactics, and weapons."
The Army prior to the Galarian years was highly centralized under Imperial control with limited Imperial Senate oversight; however, following the 1946 military reforms, the Army is under a strengthened civilian leadership regime of the War Ministry's Army Staff. The military command-and-control organization for the Army is called the Imperial High Command - Army Command.
In fiscal year 2015, the Regular Army reported a strength of just over 401,000 soldiers; the Army Reserve reported approximately 255,000. The combined Army forces' strength total at 656,000 million uniformed personnel.
History
Organization & Doctrine
The organization of the Imperial Army reflects its dual strategic functions, which do not necessarily sit well with each other. The first is to defend its heavily militarized border with Estovakiva, whose army outnumbers Belhavia’s by a measurable margin in both personnel and materiel. Secondly, it is tasked with projecting power around the world, fulfilling Belhavia’s international security obligations, either unilaterally or in conjunction with its CDI partners, as well as protecting Belhavia's extensive and far-flung overseas colonial empire.
The result is a compromise that works out remarkably well. The basic unit in the operational level is the brigade combat team ('BCT'), a balanced, self-contained combined arms force of roughly 4,500 troops capable of operating on its own for a lengthy period of time without support from higher headquarters. In high-intensity operations, however, BCTs will fight under the aegis of a division headquarter, which has under its command aside, from the manoeuver brigades, elements such as aviation assets and divisional artillery, assets vital in massing combat power in an engagement against a peer enemy. A typical armored or mechanized division contains roughly 18,000 personnel.
Higher Headquarters
Corps
The corps is the highest operational headquarter in existence in peacetime, consisting of multiple divisions and other support elements such as long-range SAMs and theatre ballistic missiles. The Imperial Army has two mechanized corps (two mechanized and one armored divisions), two armored corps (two armored and one mechanized divisions) and a rapid reaction corps (two airborne and one mountain divisions), which is used as general staff reserve. Each corps has approximately 60,000 personnel.
Divisions and Brigades
Armored
Each armored brigade combat team consists of three combined arms armoured regiments, a cavalry regiment, an artillery regiment and other support elements. An armored division consists of three armored brigades, an artillery brigade, a helicopter brigade and a support brigade.
Armored divisions and brigades constitute the main striking arm of the Imperial Army. With their mobility and fighting power, their role is to act as mobile reserves in defensive operations, or else cut through enemy lines and rampage through his operational rear in offensive operations.
Mechanized
A mechanized brigade combat team is built around the Emmerian Knight CCV family, or its ‘interim’ predecessor, the Powers series. It is a mobile, protected, medium-weight force which is light enough to airlift with ease for rapid reaction to global crises, while heavy enough to have sufficient staying power even in high-intensity combat against a peer foe, especially when it is fighting on the defensive and can leverage its superiority in mobility, sensors and network-centric platforms to offset disadvantages in weight of metal or direct fire capability.
A mechanized division consists of two mechanized brigades together with an armored brigade, a helicopter brigade and a support brigade, with the armored component providing it with extra combat power in high-intensity operations. It is a versatile combined arms force, consisting of a balanced mix of infantry, armor, and artillery, giving its commander a veritable smorgasbord of capabilities and able of performing a wide range of missions. In operational terms, mechanized divisions are optimized to hold down the enemy in defense or localized counterattacks, ‘shaping the battlefield’ until armored divisions can come into play.
Infantry
Infantry divisions and brigades are built around light troops. They are specialist units, either airborne or mountain trained, capable of acting as a very strategically-mobile reserve for rapid intervention scenarios, or operating in hostile environments which heavy forces are not optimized for. All light infantry formations of the Imperial Army are air assault trained.
Artillery
An artillery brigade may be attached to divisional HQs to act as division artillery, or else subordinated directly to corps HQ. It consists of a brigade HQ, an ISTAR company, a medium range SAM regiment, a support regiment and between two to four regiments of gun or rocket artillery. An artillery brigade under the command of a divisional HQ typically has two M270 MLRS or HIMARS regiments, whereas one directly subordinated to corps HQ will typically have two gun and two rocket regiments.
Army Aviation
Army aviation assets attached to higher operational commands are typically grouped into 'Combat Aviation Brigades', also commonly known as 'aviation brigades' or 'helicopter brigades'. These units contain a mixture of manned rotary-wing and unmanned aerial assets tailored to supporting ground forces operations. A typical Combat Aviation Brigade contains two regiments of gunships or light attack/reconnaissance helicopters, the AH-64 and OH-58 respectively, as well as support aviation regiments with UH-60 medium and Boeing CH-47 Chinook heavy lift helicopters. Recently, the Imperial Army has also begun to deploy the MQ-1C UAV in Combat Aviation Brigades.
Support
Each brigade combat team has a support regiment, allowing it to conduct independent operations when separated from its parent division for a time. However, it is an austere formation which is not meant to provide for sustained, high intensity operations. For instance, it is estimated that an armored brigade combat team can only maintain independent operations on its own for 72 hours without additional support from higher headquarters.
As such, support brigades can be found at the divisional and corps levels. These are flexible units which can provide logistical support for between one to ten brigade combat teams, depending on the number of support regiments under its command. In addition, it may contain units of military intelligence, military police, engineering, maintenance, medical, CRBN defence or other support services as and when required. A corps or theatre commander has the option of massing all divisional or corps support brigades under his purview and set up a centralised sustainment command (expeditionary) or theatre sustainment command to take charge of logistics and combat support throughout the theatre of operations.
Small units
The Regiment is the basic combat unit of the Imperial Army, with each Brigade Combat Team comprising of three maneuver regiments, one artillery regiment, one reconnaissance regiment, one engineer regiment and one support regiment.
The 'battalion' is not a unit designation used by the Imperial Army.
An armored regiment consists of 30 main battle tanks and 30 infantry fighting vehicles, divided into two companies of 14 tanks each, two companies of armoured infantry, a weapons company and a HQ company.
An artillery regiment consists of three batteries of six guns or MLRS each, an anti-air battery and a HQ company, which includes the regiment's fire direction center.
A cavalry regiment has three cavalry squadrons of 12 armored reconnaissance vehicles and a mortar section of 2 vehicles each, an anti-tank squadron of 9 vehicles, a specialist surveillance squadron and a HQ squadron.
A mechanised or light regiment consists of a HQ company and three mechanised companies, a scout platoon, a mortar platoon and a sniper group. In addition, a light infantry regiment has a weapons company consisting of four assault platoons, each with three BMI Jaguar vehicles armed with TOW missiles.
A mechanised or light infantry company consists of three infantry platoons and a headquarter platoon, which includes a FIST team responsible for directing fire support and a sniper team. Mechanised infantry companies have, in addition, a mortar section and a direct fire platoon of three M204 Mounted Combat Systems. Light infantry companies have an anti-armor section of six Javelin ATGM Command/Launch Units (CLU) and a mortar section with two 60mm mortars.
An infantry platoon is composed of 42 soldiers split into three squads of nine, a weapons squad armed with 7.62mm general purpose machine guns, MK153 SMAW or FGM-172 SRAW and a HQ squad of six: the platoon leader, the platoon sergeant, the radio-telephone operator, the platoon forward observer, the forward observer's radioman and the platoon medic. In addition, each mechanised infantry squad carries a Javelin ATGM CLU in its Powers or Knight vehicle.
