The Imperial Separatist Movement, and its military arm the Separatist Volunteer Guard, was an anti-communist organization that served as one of the main belligerents that participated in the Ruvelkan Civil War. The movement started as simply the “Separatist Movement” and originally began in the 1870s as a big tent political movement that represented an array of differing political opinions that were commonly anti-authoritarian. It eventually evolved to be a homogenous organization that also espoused democratic socialism and Ruvelkan nationalism alongside its anti-authoritarian rhetoric; the term “Imperial” was quietly added to the name when Rózsá Prohászka returned to Ruvelka in 1909.
In December 1914, the Imperial Separatists staged an armed uprising in the city of Debrecen and, following their successful takeover, began actively fighting the Communist Red Army in Hajdúböszörmény nearly a week later. Support for the movement within Ruvelka did not begin to make ground until mid-1915 with Syara’s occupation of the Zemplen Peoples’ Republic and the National Communist Party’s subsequent implementation of war communism.
The Separatist Volunteer Guard conquered large swathes of Communist territory beginning in mid-1916 and continued to gain ground well into 1917. The Civil War ended in victory for the Separatists in 1918 following the defeat of the last major Red Army elements in July and the dissolution of the Insurrectionist Ruvelkan Army in September. Following the foundation of the Principality of Ruvelka, the Imperial Separatist Movement was reformed into the Imperial Socialist Party.
