The Interstellar Assembly is an intergovernmental organization comprised of the majority of spare-faring polities in Núlne, which aims to promote peace and harmony among species, ensure and regulate proper use of the interstellar winds, and prevent further intragalactic total war. The Assembly was established in the aftermath of the Drudari-Ternary War by the Peace of Amity, and sought to act as mediator in future conflicts in order to facilitate co-existence among the denizens of the galaxy.
Headquartered in Amity, Amity, the Assembly governs five node systems under the purview of Assembly Space, while also exercising control over sectors considered unstable or a threat to peace, such as the Harmonic Trinity. The Assembly Defence Force - a naval force comprising vessels and crew from across the member polities - assists in the defence of this territory, in anti-pirate activity and in peacekeeping missions.
Membership in the Assembly is divided into two groups; the Elder Races and the Embassy Races. The former, comprising the Cosmic Hierophancy, the Drudari Ecumene, the Seven Bright Ones and the United Planets, act as a governing force, and through their Councillors on the Elder Council dictate most policy, while the remaining polities comprise the Embassy Races, sending Ambassadors to the Forum of the Cosmos.
The Assembly has received mixed evaluations. While it has been commended for its role in protecting the peace, fostering galactic unity, and preventing conflict between the Ecumene and the United Planets, it has also been derided for its inherent inequity, its role in dividing the galaxy between 'Elders' and 'Embassies', and its use as a front in the Drudari-Ternary cold war. Detractors have critised the Assembly, labeling it ineffective, biased and outdated.
Nomenclature
From its founding, the Interstellar Assembly has been officially known as such, as recognized in the first article of the Assembly section of the Peace of Amity. Also according to that document, and the subsequent Chirrin amendment, there are four official languages in Assembly Space; Chirrin, Drudari, Thyssian and Xyn. There are also, of course, a number of non-official languages spoken by the Embassy Races, and even among the Elder Races. The names of the Assembly in several interstellar languages are listed below.
