The United Planets (Thyssian: , Bahaki Pejad), also known as the Ternary Alliance and the Empire, is a Aleph plus hyperpower located in the galactic core of the Milky Way. The United Planets consists of a vast number of solar systems and worlds. The ecumenopolis of Rholosh, in its eponymous system, serves as the capital, as well as the economic and political hub of the empire.
Considered the most populous galactic polity, it is a highly diverse multispecies empire though dominated politically, socially, and economically by the Thyssians. The official state ideology and religion is the Threefold Path, which has been described by the ORI as a hyperviolent apotheotic state cult. While describing itself as a democratic confederation, it is more accurately a centralised autocracy ruled by an absolute monarch.
The roots of the empire lie in the teachings of its patron saint and namesake of its homeworld, Rholosh the Sage. Rholosh founded the Triune Temple and encouraged the Thyssians to escape the technological primitivism brought about by nuclear war which had devastated Thyss. His death in 442 BCE marked the exile of the Thyssian faithful to the world of Rholosh beginning of a thousand years of temple rule. An uprising in 364 CE against stagnant temple rule saw the creation of the oligarchic and militaristic Thyssian Ascendancy. The Thyssian Ascendancy signed the Treaty of Trivak, forming the Ternary Alliance with the Kingdom of Imikei and the Hravani Judicature. In practice it was an equal military alliance between the three polities, though de jure it was dominated by the Thyssian Ascendancy.
By 1605 the Ternary Alliance had expanded dramatically, incorporating numerous other species into its fold. Initially smaller polities were bound by similar treaties to the Thyssian Ascendancy, though various rebellions and instability necessitated the formal creation of the United Planets. While allowing for a legislature and promising equality among member states, true power and decision remained within the Ternary Alliance.
