Jowan Ivo Perran (born 16 March, 1990) is an Esthursian politician serving as the Leader of the Againsthood and Leader of the Moderates since January 2024.
Perran was quickly appointed to predecessor Rosemary Manning's centrist opposition coalition as Shadow Thane for Water in 2019. A member of the Moderates after its merger in 2022, having originally joined the Liberals in his teenage years, Perran became a strong supporter and increasingly prominent figure of the centrist wing of the Moderates. Towards the end of Manning's tenure as leader, Perran became an outspoken opponent of the party's shift right on immigration. His resignation from her Shadow Cabinet in December 2023 was a key factor in her eventual resignation.
Perran was elected leader of the Moderates following Manning's resignation at the start of 2024, and has since been amongst the most popular politicians in Esthursia, as the youngest leader of a major political party in the 21st century and the first openly LGBTQ+ leader. His leadership has seen the Moderates shift to a pro-immigration stance, and more economically interventionist policies, moving the party further to the political centreground.
Early life and education
Perran was born in 1990, in Rennezh, the capital of the region of Ezhonyth, in Esthursia.
Joining the Liberal Party in the 2000s, he participated in the 2009-2011 Esthursian student protests. Studying politics and Ezhoneg, he gained a first from the Riding Lorestead of Ezhonyth (RLE) and became a councillor on the Rennezh council in 2010.
Political career
Perran was elected to the House of Thanes in 2018, aged just 28, amidst a wider fallback of centrist and right-wing members during the 2018 Esthursian general election.
