Law enforcement in Fratanica
Law enforcement in Fratanica is constitutionally established as a concurrent power between the federal government and the provinces. As a result, each province maintains its own police force and investigative agencies, however, the federal government also maintains specialized law enforcement agencies for different purposes.
Policing is based off of Fratanican common law, such as the Fratanican Criminal Code and the Fratanican Civil Code, as well as local and provincial mandates and regulations.
Federal law enforcement
National Police Authority
The National Police Authority, or more commonly known as the National Police, is a federal police agency entrusted with constitutionally-mandated building security, airport and embassy security, and assisting local law enforcement agencies in case of major disturbances or emergencies.
National Protection Bureau
The National Protection Bureau is involved in the security of the President, the Prime Minister, their families, and other important figures within the executive branch.
Federal Security Office
The Federal Security Office is the national investigative and domestic intelligence agency of Fratanica. The agency partakes in counterespionage, domestic intelligence, cybersecurity, and large-scale police operations.
Fratanican Coast Guard
The Fratanican Coast Guard possesses law enforcement powers in regards to the seas surrounding Fratanica, enforcing marine environmental regulations and maritime law.
Provincial law enforcement
Each province maintains its own police force and investigative agency within Fratanica, and they are responsible for managing the majority of Fratanican law enforcement.
Provincial Police Forces
Provincial Police Forces, or PPFs, are the official name for the various provincial police agencies. These are organized and maintained by their respective regional governments, and are often geographically broken down into towns and cities. Each province's interior minister supervises and oversees these police forces.
The uniforms of these police forces range by color and composition with different types of uniforms.
These police forces make up much of the law enforcement presence throughout Fratanica, and enforce federal and provincial legal statutes. It is up to the provincial governments to determine what kind of policing power these agencies have.
Local law enforcement
Municipal bylaw enforcement
Many municipalities hire bylaw enforcement officers, in order to enforce municipal regulations, bylaws, and statutes. These bylaw enforcement officers are divided into multiple types:
- General bylaw enforcement: These enforcement officers are in charge of enforcing compliance to general municipal statutes. They may wear police-like uniforms or armbands to show that they are bylaw enforcement. Inspectors also fall within this category.
- Code enforcement: Code enforcement officers focus particularly on one subset or field of municipal code, such as building code, parking enforcement, animal regulations, and more.
Municipal police forces
Provincial governments may sometimes grant law enforcement powers to municipalities, particularly large ones, who hold the same power as a standard provincial law enforcement agency and may enforce criminal laws.
