The Federation of Legionas, simply known as Legionas, is a democratic Federation under a constitutional monarchy in the International Democratic Union located in East Catica bordered by three nations namely Shen to the North, Rhand to the North East, Arcadia Dazeber to the West and Xiomera to the East.
With its six regions and one Federal Capital Territory containing an estimated population of over 95 million residents, it is considered an economic ,social and political powerhouse in the region. The capital, Aunistria, was officially proclaimed on the 11th of October 2019 after over a decade of planning and development. The largest city and former capital, Bayview, is considered the gateway into Legionas and with a population of 6.5 million in the city and adjacent suburbs and 18 million in the metropolitan area, is one of the largest cities in the entire IDU. Other cities that have populations of 3+ million residents include Moense, Wasedron and Verdesia. Verdesia was the first capital of Legionas when it proclaimed independence in 1776 and is still the seat of the royal family, The House of Verdesia. The population is mostly situated on he coast but the inland population has grown exponentially over the last 50 years as a result of a government initiative to populate the sparsely populated interior as well as decongest the coastal cities. As of 2019, around 62% of the population resides on the coast and the other 38% resides in the interior. The interior is mostly dominated by mountains, forests and the Smirnya Valley.
Little is known of the history of the tribes that inhabited Legionas and various archaeological sites are dotted around the country which are being studied to this day.The Ermizat Kingdom was officially proclaimed at around 1092 A.D and officially began trading with its neighbors namely Xiomera and the Shen Empire to the north. The Navy has been the cornerstone of the Legionas Armed Forces for centuries thanks to its large coastline.
The economy of Legionas was dominated by natural resources for centuries and small arms manufacturing for its own needs. After the Legionas Civil War, the powers of the Monarchy were severely diminished and large scale public works, industrialization and business-friendly legislation has led to the economic miracle that the Federation experienced from the early 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century. The Golden Age of Legionas is widely believed to be now as, thanks to the work of the leaders of the 20th century, the Federation is one of,if not, the most dominant nations in Catica and the entire International Democratic Union.
Etymology
While many theories surmise as to the etymological origins of Legionas, the name is now accepted as coming from the Legisatto and Ermizi words of Le'gon meaning 'Land of Wonder' and Legoan meaning 'God's Resting Place' respectively. At independence the name Legionas was decided to unite the dominant groups in the area. The standard way to refer to someone from Legionas is Legionite, although 'Legionasian' is also acceptable and used interchangeably.
History
Early History
Fossils found in Legionas in the early 20th Century indicate that early humans roamed the area more than 50,000 years ago. Findings in the Smirnya Valley in 1905 show that small-scale settlements were common around 12000 years ago. Between 2000 B.C to 500 B.C an early Ermizi city by the name of Ya'edsa dominated the northern region of Legionas until its collapse due to diseases brought by traders of unknown origin. The early Ermizi and Legisatto settlements mostly focused on trade, agriculture, nomadism and primitive blacksmithing.
Age of Ermizi Dominance
Between 100 A.D to 900 A.D, the Early States of Erimzat and Legisatta dominated the region and subjugated smaller settlements. battle lines were beginning to form with The Ermizat State in the South and The Legisatta State in the North. In 1090 the Ermizat Army invaded the Northern Legisatta State and defeated their army in the Battle of the Red River because the Ermizi Army threw all their dead foes into the Tyria River. Thus the Age of Ermizi Dominance began. In 1092 A.D the Ermizi State became united under King Rumius the Conqueror. He was offered the throne after commanding the Ermizat Army and gaining a decisive victory against the Legisatta Army. The Ermizat Kingdom annexed a section of Legisatta land and subjugated the rest as a slave state. The capital city was decided to be on the banks of the Eria River where the city of Nineveh now sits. The new Kingdom immediately began to consolidate its land and diversify its relatively small economy. Emphasis was put on trade, especially the slave trade, agriculture, basket-weaving,blacksmithing and mining. Slave markets dotted the nation and slaves worked in most farms. Slaves were given basic rights and were rarely mistreated by their owners. In 1125, the King permitted citizens to seek audience with him and air out their grievances and await judgement. After a few months the king decided to delegate this power to the regional leaders. In the same year, the first set of laws was published and was called the 'Praecepta autem servus domini rationes' which means 'The rules of slave-owner relations'. In 1126, large deposits of gold and silver were found close to Mount Rosmana and there whereabouts were kept a secret and a matter of National Security. With the newly found riches, King Rumius managed to fund the construction of a brand new capital city known as Domgarza
which quickly became a trading and cultural hub on the Nereus Sea. Due to the relative peace in the region, the Kingdom did not focus on its military, instead positioning itself as a hub for intellectuals from the entire world. The first library in the region opened in 1149 A.D and was soon filled with various religious, medical, historical and scientific texts.
In 1150 A.D King Rumius passed away at the ripe old age of 91 years old. His son, King Suamira, was crowned later that year. Within a decade, he managed to squander a large portion of the national coffers. Discontent began to rise in the Kingdom and some began to plan the overthrow of the Hedonist King. In 1199, the Legisatta separatists began a civil war which lasted a year, in which King Suamira was killed by an ambush while leading his army to siege the Legisatta headquarters. His Grand Vizier, defeated the Legisatta separatists and ruled for 5 years as a regent until King Suamira's son became of age. When King Suamira's son, King Rumius II, turned 20 years old he was instated as the third Ermizat King in 1205 A.D.
King Rumius II was almost exactly like his father, although more incompetent. He was manipulated by all his advisors, his court and his wives as well as concubines. His reign signified the gradual downfall of the Ermizat Kingdom. The city of Domgarza was a cesspool of prostitutes, criminals, and conmen yet the only thing the King cared about was his own welfare. He never left his palace for the last five years of his reign because the situation in the city became deplorable. In 1220 the Grand Empire of Shen invaded the North of the Ermizat Kingdom and offered to vassalize the state. King Rumius II refused and committed suicide in his palace on the 13th of August 1220. His brother, King Huamzia, saw no other alternative than to submit to the will of Empress Liu. The area of the Kingdom was severely diminished and the vast gold and silver mines were taken over by the Shen Empire. Thus the Age of Humiliation began.
Age of Humiliation
From 1220 upto Independence, the Ermizat Kingdom was a vassal of the Great Shen Empire. Resources were exploited by the Shen at the expense of the Ermizi and Legisatta groups. During this time, trade routes originating from the Horadam and Aegir Ocean coasts and moving into Shen and Zamastan were established. Traders from Hespia and Catica alike sold their goods at designated ports such as Wasedron, Bayview, Limprostanz and Horadam after which caravans travelled to the interior. Skithian immigrants also settled in the area as well as Germanic tribes from Arcadia-Dazeber. Christianity was introduced by Eirian traders and was quickly adopted by the remaining nobility and the Ermizat King, King Huamzia II, who saw it as a unifying factor in the region.
Secret Christianization of the state was enacted under the noses of the Shen overlords with the help of Arcadia-Dazeberian nobles and Eirian dukes. The titles of the King became Christianized as well as his name, as he was baptised and christened King Charles I. Soon the Ermizat King managed to negotiate a reduction of payment of tribute to once every five years from annually.
In 1520, exactly 300 years after vassalisation under Shen, the Legionite culture was officially recognized as the official culture, a result of intermingling of Ermizi and Legisatta cultures. In the same year King Alexander I was crowned the King of Legionas by the Pope who travelled all the way from Gardavasque. In honour of King Alexander I a new Palace was constructed in the city of Verdesia, a city controlled by Legionas although completely bordered by Shen. King Alexander I negotiated with the Shen Empire for land upto Verdesia which was agreed after payment of a few tonnes of gold and silver. Verdesia was proclaimed as the new capital of the Vassal state of Legionas and exorbitant amounts of the nation's finances on the development of the new capital.
The coffers in the Legionas state were drying up and revenue streams from gold and silver mines were becoming scarce due to the exhaustion of the mines. A drastic decision was made by King Alexander I to tax goods bound to the Shen Empire. This did not go over well with the Shen Officials but after a round of deliberation and King Alexander I presenting his case the decision was allowed, but 10% of the profits would still be given to Shen Empire. This move bolstered the national coffers and a period of large scale development took place.
Horse rearing, arms manufacturing, ship building, extensive mining, basic industrialization and agriculture were introduced in the nation expanding the amount of goods that the nation was able to trade with. With the newly found funds, schools and health centres were introduced for the nobles and middle class, sanitation and sewage lines were built in cities and markets were upgraded and expanded to great standards with the ability to accomodate traders from far and wide. The King's court was staffed with competent Legionite nobles and Shen elites which greatly increased the standards of leadership in the nation.
With the increased instability prevalent in the Shen Empire, discussions into the idea of declaring independence were being considered. The Shen Empire had given the Kingdom wide-ranging autonomy as they were dealing with their own problems. Unlike the Empire, Legionas focused on sciences and mathematics instead of philosophy and art. A secret army was being formed in case of an improbable Shen civil war as a defensive outfit. Cities were becoming more Legionite and straying away from Shen influence. Surprisingly the Heavenly Throne ignored the developments in Legionas even though it was obvious they were getting ready to split from the Empire. In 1716, King Frederick II announced and organized civil disobedience among the Legionites thus affecting trade flowing into Biaking and Sharanfo. The Imperial Shen Army managed to quell the unrest for a while but soon many Legionites from all walks of life felt that enough was enough. On the 19th of November 1740, the Legionite Revolutionary Army rose up on King Leopold I's command and quickly took over the eastern part of the Shen Empire. Before the Shen Army could muster a defense, the Legionite army began to advance to forward defensive positions. The King saw the weakness of the Shen Army and pushed them out of the traditional Ermizat Kingdom land. Thanks to mastery of the land and their superior morale, they managed to decimate the Imperial Shen Army by 1774.
Independence and Outward Expansion
On the 12th of April 1776, The Kingdom of Legionas was born. Early on, the state was divided after the independence war. Various groups had occupied traditional Legionite land and the King set to work to assimilate them. The coasts of Legionas were also full of pirates and illegal whalers. The Kingdom bought and upgraded several Man-o-Wars and Ships-of-the-Line. A former Shen Admiral was hired by the King to head the first Legionite Navy as well as train the King's nephew, Prince Samuel of Wasedron, as a competent admiral and his successor.
Instability caused by the Legionas War of Independence left the Shen Empire weak and ineffective leaving it's border regions, especially in the East ripe for the taking. In 1790, the Legionite Imperial Army launched an offensive capturing large swathes of land to the North and North West. A peace settlement was agreed upon in 1801, two years before the Rhandi War of Independence which was funded heavily by King William I. In 1810, King William I sent an offer to the Heavenly Throne to finalize the borders of the two nations which were agreed upon on Christmas Eve, 1810. For about a decade the Kingdom embarked on consolidation of the newly-acquired lands. Massive public works were undertaken to the North and North West of the nation and assimilation of smaller communities was performed as a matter of National Security. Iron, copper, silver and salt mines were discovered and exploited relentlessly by the Kingdom. Trade routes traversing the entire region originated from coastal cities like Bayview(called Kiraçan at the time) and Wasedron, which grew exponentially as a result of the volume of trade passing through them. The Kingdom prioritised its own economy adopting protectionist policies and imposing tariffs on foreign goods. In 1832 King William I made English the official state language and decreed that all laws must be written in English, inexplicably led to increased integration of the minor cultures by undermining the three dominant cultures. Around this time the possibility of establishing a colony in Hespia was being seriously considered in the King's Court. In 1851, King William I ordered his top Admiral, Captain Allan Erickson, to organize an expedition to Hespia and find a suitable location for the establishment of a Legionite settlement on the continent. Captain Allan Erickson had heard of the riches in Hespia and decided to create a trading company to exploit the resource rich lands to the north before embarking on his maiden voyage. In 1852 an expedition 20 ships strong set out to conquer virgin lands in Hespia for the King. Along the way one ship, a frigate, was shipwrecked off the coast of Iustitia City leading to the deaths of 10 crewmen. The expedition was also attacked by pirates off the Gladysinthian coast in the Strait of Vulkaria forcing the expedition to beach on an island in the Elkjop Bay. The land was somewhat barren except for a large population of wild boars that lived on small patches of grass on the island. The Island was uninhabited although various broken weapons were found on the island indicating the presence of human activity on the island, most likely hunting expeditions. The expeditioners managed to repair their ships using crude materials and headed to the city of Tofino, believed to be south of their current location.
Two ships were separated from the expedition in a storm in the Horseshoe Bay and were shipwrecked off the coast of Point Tarin. Captain Erickson managed to meet Zamastanian President Avi Taures who allowed the Legionites to repair their ships and restore their supplies for no cost whatsoever. The expedition returned to Bayview in 1854, almost two years after they embarked on their mission. They were received warmly at the Palace of Verdesia by King William I, Captain Erickson being knighted for his actions. Captain Erickson's expedition led to the official declaration of interest by Legionas in obtaining a colony in Hespia.
In 1856 a large expedition led by Captain Erickson returned to Hespia, first docking at Tofino, Zamastan's capital, to resupply and finally landing at present day Asmena in Zerphique. There they established a settlement known as Pheasant's Point due to the large amounts of Zerphiquean Pheasants in the area. The settlement was, from the onset, a target of the local native tribes who were hostile to the Legionite settlers. Captain Erickson initiated a series of punitive expeditions to pacify the locals culminating in the capture of 30 locals in total. An understanding was established between the settlers and the locals, although after months of frequent conflict. Captain Erickson returned to Legionas in 1860 after the settlement became self-sustainable and started to expand. He left with the crew of his flagship, The Lützos. The total population of the settlement was 203 people with 15 ships and 100 barrels of gunpowder and 50 crates of ammunition which could last them for two years. Captain Erickson docked at Providence, Zamastan and made an agreement with a local group of farmers to supply the settlers with grain and other agricultural goods on a bi-annual basis. He finally returned to Legionas and informed the King on the success of the settlement and the diverse fauna and flora present in the region. The King gave Captain Erickson's trading company, The South Hespia Company, a mandate to control the development of the colony for 20 years and would receive an annual grant of 17,500 dollars from the Government and an initial loan of 50,000 dollars to buy the required items and trading licenses as well as establishing a Headquarters in Bayview to coordinate all activities of the company.
At this time another naval officer, Captain Otto Von Helmer, saw the possibility of increasing his prestige and status by exploring the Southern Tenebric Ocean. Unfortunately his expedition was far less successful than Captain Erickson's.

Population
The Legionite Census Bureau estimates that the population of Legionas is 123,815,032 as of March 1 2019 and is increasing at the rate of 1 person (net gain) every 12 seconds or about 6600 people a day. The population of Legionas is on average 39 years old, 40.5 years for men and 38.5 years for women. The population has almost doubled over the last 75 years from an estimated population of 66.2 million as of 1929. In the 20th century the average woman had 4.35 children which played a major factor in the rapid increase in population. The nation did adopt family planning policies later on in the century which led to the decrease in number of children. Since the early 1970's the average number of children in families was 2.7 children per family. To increase the population even further the Legionite government has heavily promoted immigration of citizens of less developed nations which has led to the immigration of around 10 million people as of 2019 mainly for work and education. The foreign born population of Legionas is estimated to be 17.04 million people as of 2019. The population of Legionas is very diverse with around 15 ancestry groups having more than 1 million people. Native born Legionites are the largest group with around 49 million people followed by Ermizi-Legionites, Zerphiquean-Legionites, Rhandi-Legionites, Shenian-Legionites and Legisatto-Legionites. Minorities constitute 41% of the total population. Legionas has a birth rate of 12 per 1,000, which is below the world average. Its population growth rate is positive at 1.1%, h. In fiscal year 2016, more than a million immigrants (most of whom entered through family reunification) were granted legal residence mostly from Vulkaria and Shen. Around 3.9% of Legionites identify as LGBT, 4.3% for women as compared to 3.4% for men. The highest percentage came from Neijiang province while the lowest percentage came from Oradea Province.

Education
Education in Legionas is overseen by the Ministry of Education. Regional governments are responsible for the implementation of policy for public education and state-funded schools at a local level.
The Legionite education system is organized into four main stages based on age namely Early education(Ages 3-5), Primary education(Ages 6-13), Secondary Education(Ages 14-18) and Higher Education (Ages 19+).
After the conclusion of each stage an examination is undertaken to assess all students and facilitate transition to the higher level.
Early, primary and secondary education are free and accessible to all families while higher education is subsidized by the federal government.
Early Education
The Early education system in Legionas is heavily focused on developing the physical, mental, emotional, cognitive and language skills by utilizing Vygotsky’s socio-cultural, Piaget’s constructivist and Kolb's experiential learning theory in a unique blend that ensures the smooth transition into the more abstract primary level. The system is the first level in the Legionite education system and typically admits children at the age of 3 years although reasonable exceptions are considered. It runs for three years after which students are transitioned to primary education after undertaking a practical examination which tests basic arithmetic, logic and linguistic skills. Transition rate is at 99.1% as of the 2012 census.
Primary Education
This is the second stage and first formal stage of the Legionite education system as well as the longest and most important stage. It begins at the age of six years on and runs for eight years after which a national examination is undertaken. There are nine main subjects which are mathematics, english, biology, physics, chemistry, music, social studies, a second language which the student is allowed to choose based on a series of options and physical education or PE. The first year of this stage is known as Year 1 and proceeds all the way to the last year which is known as Year 8. At the end of the school year all students proceed to the next stage. Primary schools in Legionas fall into two stages namely public state funded schools and private independently owned schools. Segregation of genders was banned to foster inter-gender relationships in schools and cooperation.
Secondary Education
This is the third stage and second formal stage of the Legionite education system.
Higher Education
This is the final and most advanced stage in the Legionite education system.
Economy
The Legionite economy is very diversified, highly developed and market oriented. It is one of the largest economies in the IDU measured by nominal gross domestic product (GDP), purchasing power parity (PPP), and GDP per capita, comprising over 9% of world GDP.
Infrastructure
Transportation
Legionas has a total road network of approximately 2.5 million miles on which 80% of Legionites drive their personal vehicles, one of the highest rates in the IDU. Public transportation is prevalent in urban centres and subsidized as well as managed by regional governments. The average Legionite adult spends 49 minutes travelling 43 kilometres a day. The maintenance of roads is managed by the regional governments and coordinated by the Federal Roads Authority. Roads are Classified in Legionas on an alphabetical basis, conforming with World Assembly regulations. The nation is connected with other IDU nations by continental highways such as the Horadam road which moves from Horadam all the way to Vongane, Quetana as well as a tunnel connecting Legionas to Xiomera. Trucks are less common in Legionas as compared to other IDU nations thanks to an established rail and pipeline transport network which have been subsidized by the government and developed massively to accomodate large volumes of goods as well as passengers. Bicycle use for transport is minimal but expanding at a quick pace thanks to efforts by environmental activists.
There are three main pipeline networks in Legionas, two of which transport natural gas and the other which transports oil. They all end at Port Lutzos Oil Refinery and Terminal. Rail Transportation is relatively cheap and developed in Legionas, the network covering all regions in Legionas. Approximately 60% of goods and 32% of passengers travel by rail over long distances. Use of rail transport by passengers is slowly decreasing though with a decrease of 1.3% expected in 2020. New rail lines are being laid to connect the new capital, Aunistria, to the national rail network. The Legionite rail network is completely electric powered and the trains move at 245 Kilometres Per Hour at top speed. Light rail networks have also been incorporated in to many urban area transport grids to supplement subway networks.
Air transport in Legionas is very developed and supported by the local Airplane manufacturing industry which is the largest in the IDU. The civil airline industry is entirely privately owned and has been largely deregulated since 1992, while most major airports are publicly owned. Legionas' state owned LegionAir is one of the largest in the world having been expanded massively since its nationalization in 2005. Legionas has six major international airports in the largest cities namely Bayview, Wasedron, Verdesia, Horadam, Moense and Limprostanz and a dozen or so regional airports as well as a large number of privately and publicly owned airstrips. Legionas' largest airport, Bayview International Airport is one of the busiest in the world and is connected to every other major airport in the IDU.
Recent innovations in transport technology notably electric cars have been wholeheartedly embraced by the Legionite population due to their subsidization by the government. Most legionite families own at least two cars, one of which being an electric car. Electric car charging stations have cropped up in most, if not all, urban centres. Metro systems have also received increased attention as a great way of decongesting cities and reducing the carbon footprint of the nation. Tram systems and subways have been developed in some urban areas mainly Aunistria, Wasedron, Moense, Verdesia and Sherfield. Thanks to these developments the average time spent by legionites in transit has dropped exponentially, almost in half based on a recent study by Bayview University. The Legionite Government has partnered with Xiomera in the development of a system of bridges and road networks connecting the border islands to the mainland to foster increased development.
Energy
The Legionite energy market is about 27,000 terawatt hours per year. Energy consumption per capita is 3.9 tons (3954 kg) of oil equivalent per year based on a 2015 study by the Ministry of Energy, a sharp decline from 1995 when it was at 7.8 tons (7076 kg) . In 2005, 27% of this energy came from nuclear power, 23% from hydrothermal power, 19% from natural gas, 16% from geothermal sources, 15% from coal power, 12% from oil and the rest (3%) from solar and wind sources. The Federation of Legionas is the world's largest producer of geothermal and hydro-electric power. Legionas has 17% of global natural gas and 6% of oil reserves.
The Legionite government passed an environmental accord which pledges to reduce Legionas' carbon footprint by gradually decreasing reliance on coal and oil powered plants and increasing reliance on solar powered and wind powered plants which have been planned to contribute a total of 12% of Legionas' energy by 2015. Projects such as the Alexandros Range Wind Power Project and the Zarmesa Islands Solar Power Projects Phase I and II have so far been completed by the government which have increased the percent of solar and wind power contribution to the power grid from 0.2% to 3% allowing the Government to retire the aging Psian Oil Plant and Ross Ridge Oil Plant which were noted as one of the largest pollutants in the nation
.
Legionas has partnered with various nations notably Sunemia, Xiomera, Shen and Zerphique to develop more environmentally friendly power generation projects. The Global Development Investment Bank has also provided funds to the Legionite government to aid in the construction of the colossal King Huamzia II Dam project which is the final stage of the Three Kings Mega Dams Project on the Tyria River.

The Federation of Legionas maintains a strong military, mostly as a deterrent against foreign aggression and taking part in peacekeeping missions. A total of 1.35 million personnel are in active military service in all branches. The Legionite Military was first formed in the immediate aftermath of the Legionite civil war in October 12th 1940 as one of the first acts of parliament. Since then the force has continually grown and modernized into the efficient military that it is today. Most of the Military's needs are catered for by the Nation's thriving Arms Industry. The Military's expenditure amounted to 3.7 percent of Legionite gross domestic product (GDP) in the 2019-20 financial year and is expected to be decreased to 3.5 percent in the next financial year.

Culture
Over many centuries, frequent contact and assimilation of other communities and civilizations has led to the development of the unique Legionite culture today. Vestiges of other cultures such as the Ermizi culture still remains although many analysts predict that the assimilation of these smaller cultures into the larger Legionite culture will be imminent. Legionite culture can be felt in almost every nation in the IDU especially its former colony, Zerphique.

Stereotypes
Many stereotypes are prevalent in global culture about Legionites, some of them untrue but others, although exaggerated to a degree, are true. One that is considered as a fact is that Legionites are voracious beer drinkers.
Officially Legionites are the drink the most beers per capita and the annual Festival of the Clove Harvest is a popular festival in Legionas famed for the sheer amounts of alcohol consumed, especially Legionite made Razgia and Friase clove beer.
Other stereotypes which are somehow true are that; Legionite women are more insecure than other women in the IDU, Legionite children read more novels than other children, most Legionites hate tea, most Legionites love camping and other outdoor activities and most Legionites own guns and have participated in a hunting activity at some point in their lives.
