The Mainland Dominion was a Midlonian Colony centred on the coasts of what would become the Freethinker Mainland, which was comprised of the various colonies and provinces that Midlonia government and private enterprise had established on the continent. These famously declared their independence in the Freethinker Declaration of Severence and formed the Freethinker Commonwealth. The colonies ranged from the Six Great Cities of the Commonwealth to various other small associated territories that were more developed than the small scale and other dispersed outposts enterprising individuals had founded.

The Dominion came to an end officially on 7th April 1885 (SC) with the surrender of Midlonian forces in Navarre.

Early History

The first established Midlonian colony was Pebble Landing in 1656 with further colonies rapidly established at New Ashby, Nova Midlonia and Corsair between 1660-1670. At this time, first contact with the native Freestian Vampires occurred, with relations quickly developing to the point of cultural assimilation of the draconian species, an important advantage in the Midlonian colonial effort. Not to be outdone the Pantocratorians and Knootians followed suit in what became known as “The scramble for the Mainland” in 1658 and 1672 respectively. The Knootians chose an area on the Northern Coast, today the site of Navarre, whilst the Pantocratians moved through the Whitestone Valley to settle in the area known as the Middle Sea as well as settling areas of the Southern Straits and on the Fallow Colony.

Midlonia's Empire was on the ascendancy during this time, establishing trading posts world wide as well as it's colonies on the Mainland. It ejected the Knootians from the Navarre region in 1676. Further Midlonian colonies at Adamsea and Mouray were settled by 1674, with the Pantocratorians settling the far end of Green Valley in 1675, founding the great harbour at Saint Benedene, which would later become Benarbor, the second city of the Dominion.

Fearing a Pantocratorian takeover, the forces of Midlonia, both government troops and colonial militia, set about establishing Midlonian supremacy across the continent. This resulted in the War of the Mainland, a long but victorious campaign that sealed the dominance of the Midlonian Empire on the continent.

Development into the Dominion

Age of Discovery

The Age of discovery is the first general epoch in the history of the Mainland as a unit, and refers to the decades of exploration by ship and by land across the great landmass. Many spectacular voyages of discovery supported an expanding scientific and industrial nation, bringing vast wealth and resources to the rapidly growing empire. The competition between various city states intensified, with Navarre and Benarbor becoming the two greatest ports, dominating trade on the Northern and Southern coasts respectively. This dominance lead to two things, what became known as "the Great Rivalry" between the two cities and the establishment of two major power and population bases for the Midlonians to rule their Empire from.
