Matthias Lennart Bergqvist (born 21 December 1967) is Scanonian politician currently serving as xth Prime Minister of Scanonia. He previously served as Minister of Internal Affairs (5 April 2016 – 24 April 2018) and Minister of Justice (12 January 2013 – 5 April 2016) in Daniela Holmberg's second term and Anders Mårtensson's first and only term.

In 1993 he joined politics in the ranks of the Scanonian Social Democratic League and served as member of the Kristianstad City Council for 5 years. In 1998 he was elected a member of the Scanonian Riksdag for Kristianstad. In 2013 he was appointed Minister of Justice by Daniela Holmberg in her second term, and was re-appointed by her successor, Anders Mårtensson. In 2016 he was appointed Minister of Internal Affairs, replacing Ludvig Grahn after a controversy regarding the corruption in the Police high ranks. In the same year, on party internal elections, he was elected as leader of the SSDL. On general elections in 2018 he won against Thorbjörn Danielsson from the Scanonian Democratic Initiative and became Scanonian Prime Minister.

Matthias Bergqvist holds a degree in Law Science from the University of Kristianstad.

Early and personal life

Matthias was born on 21st of December 1967 in Kristianstad, Scanonia to father Vincent Bergqvist, a famous Kristianstad lawyer and Helena Bergqvist (nee Svenson), professor of History at the Queen Marianna University in Kristianstad. He underwent primary and secondary education in Jarlberg neighbourhood of Kristianstad, close to his family house, after that enrolling in the University of Kristianstad in the department for Law Sciencies. In 1986 he completed his compulsory military service in 6th Infantry Battalion in Nassau. He spent his third year as an exchange student in Noordenstaat, where he met with his now-wife Agata with whom he has two children, Sofia (14) and Robert (10).

Political career

After graduating from the university and pursuing law career at his father's law firm, he was invited to the Scanonian Social Democratic League by then party leader and Prime Minister, Göran Östberg, a good friend of Matthias's father. After joining the ranks of the SSDL, he was elected as member of the Kristianstad City Council. Five years later, in 1998, he was elected as member of the Riksdag for Kristianstad constituency. He gradually climbed the ranks in the SSDL: In 2003 he was appointed in Riksdag Judiciary Committee, and in 2007 he became president of the aforementioned Committee. He was one of the drafters of the 2009 judiciary system reforms, for which he was praised by the general public. In 2013 he was appointed Minister of Justice by Daniela Holmberg in her second term, and was re-appointed by her successor, Anders Mårtensson. In 2016 he was appointed Minister of Internal Affairs, replacing Ludvig Grahn after a controversy regarding the corruption in the Police high ranks.
