The Grimburg Contigency is an internal armed conflict conflict between the Government of Norvinia and the GREN separatist. The conflict began on 17 April 1990 with Hatrinch coup and bombings marking the beginning of the conflict, and until 1990 the Grimburg Liberation Army waged further insurgency as a GREN's ally which has involved multiple armed groups, guerilla warfare and terrorism. The conflict lasted for almost 10 years, although overall chronologies and casualties remained inconclusive to the knowledge on either side, according to sources from both sides of the conflict. Peace deals have been signed between the government and two major armed groups in exchange for local referendum granting additional authorities to the local region. While GREN are officially disbanded since then - the other, smaller armed groups continue to exist today.

Background

The root cause of this conflict is associated in a long history of resistance by the islander against foreign rule, including the Grimburg Dissolution war, The Friction Days and the Civil War; Grimburg resistance against the Norvish government has persisted ever since. During the sovereignty of King Mortimer, political tensions and open hostilities developed between the two faction. Most notably the creation of GREN organisation which was triggered after the Jerian massacre on March 18, 1928, during which 60-100 Grimburg islander on a street protest were killed.

Prior to the conflict, Central Grimburg province had undergone a series of terrorism with frequent clashes between the local police, GREN, and other foreign organisation. Following a period of widespread poverty and unemployment, on April 1990, military defector Major Mallaby Varrean staged a military coup near hatrinch and proclaimed Grimburg's independence with extreme left-leaning view againts the state in a hope of gaining civilian support. Varrean announced that his rule would provide a new hope for the Grimburg people againts the current administration, which would bring political and socio-economic improvement. However, he was unsuccessful in convincing these promises and later he was replaced by Huntleigh Norage as the new leader of GREN.
