National symbols of Midrasia

The national symbols of Midrasia are things which are associated with or otherwise represent the Republic of Midrasia and its associated culture. Some of these symbols have official status, such as the flag and coat of arms, while others are unofficial but nonetheless are recognised to have some association with Midrasia or its republican traditions.

Flag and coat of arms

National Flag MDRKingdomflag2.png The national flag of Midrasia, known as the Drapeiu, has been in official use since 1624. Prior to this stripes of maroon and white represented Midrasian ships as part of the League of Argolis. The flag has no official meaning, though the stripes are believed to represent the original five kingdoms which now make up the Midrasian nation.
Republican Banner Midrasia.png The Republican banner of Midrasia has been in use since 1791 and has its origins in the Midrasian revolution where it was used by forces loyal to the Parliament. The maroon of the flag is said to represent the blood split during the revolution, whilst the white represents the peace and democracy brought about by this sacrifice. Legend holds that the flag was created when revolutionaries spilt wine on a table cloth which was then used as a flag to rally loyal forces.
Coat of Arms MDREmblem.png The Coat of Arms of Midrasia was introduced following the Midrasian Civil war. It features the national animal of the rooster and reference to the date of '1624' which marks the date of the execution of Henry V and the declaration of the Midrasian Republic. The arms also features the various honours held by the monarchy, representing their inheritance by the nation as a whole. The Fasces also represents the new republican form of government.

La Mydresse

Midrasia personified as La Mydresse

La Mydresse is the national personification of Midrasia.

The allegory of Midrasia has existed since ancient times, with La Mydresse first appearing on currency under the Fiorentine Empire during the first century BCE though originally she was known as Midrisia. La Mydresse saw a re-emergence following the unification of Midrasia during the fourteenth century, though baring her new name. Since then La Mydresse has existed in a number of different depictions, with most official state representations displaying her as a warrior woman. Nevertheless, other unofficial depictions have depicted La Mydresse as a peaceful woman of beauty or even as a temperamental diva.

National anthem

The national anthem of Midrasia, Hymne des Mydra was composed by Jean-Baptiste Lemaître in 1822 and officially adopted in 1824. The lyrics of the anthem pay homage to the Civil war and revolutionary struggles against tyranny and monarchism, whilst exalting the virtues of the Midrasian people and the nation.

Flora and fauna

National animal Brown Leghorn rooster in Australia.jpg The Mydran Rooster is the national animal of Midrasia, having associations with the Midrasian people since ancient history. The rooster came to particular prominence during the civil war and revolution however as an anti-authority symbol for both the anti-monarchical and anti-consular forces.
National flower Single lavendar flower02.jpg The Lavender flower is the national flower of Midrasia and its highly cultivated in the nation's southern regions.
Golden Eagle Aquila chrysaetos Flickr.jpg Despite not being an official emblem of Midrasia, the golden eagle has long been associated with Midrasia and is particularly associated with Midrasian political or military symbolism.

Other national imagery

Fasces Fasces lictoriae.svg The fasces has long been associated with Asuran republicanism, tracing its origins back to the Fiorentine Republic. The symbol was adopted into national imagery following the Civil war.
Order of the Golden Fleece Insignia of Knights of the Austrian Order of the Golden Fleece.svg The Order of the Golden Fleece was once a honour held by the Midrasian monarchy but inherited by the Midrasian Old Republic. The order is said to represent chivalry and was awarded to Louis IV upon his coronation. Today the order reflects all of Midrasia as a pious and chivalrous Alydian society.
Wine Red Wine Glass.jpg Wine has long been a symbol of Midrasia with the nation being the largest wine producer and consumer in all of Aeia. Midrasia is particularly well known for its red wine.
