The Naua Roa Free Association & Independence Act, 1989 was the final piece of legislation required for the independence of the Patrick Islands as Naua Roa. The act was passed almost unanimously (one Senator voted against in the County Court). The contents of the act had already been agreed upon under a previous act, the Naua Roa Sovereignty Agreements Act, 1988.
The act was passed on the 22nd January, 1989, and took effect on the 4th April, 1989 when Naua Roa officially became a soverign and independent nation.
