The city of Nieuw Hoop (English: New Hope) is the capital city of Rensselaerswijck, as well as the administrative center and largest city in the Province of Nieuw Hoop. The city was the first settlement to be founded by Freijian colonists, and duly named for the hope the settlers brought to the colonies. As the seat of all three executive branches of government: the Parliament, the Supreme Court, and the Home Office (the official workplace for the Executive Branch and President) it is the most influential city in the country and one of the most influencial in Northern Hibernia. After experiencing a population boom in the late 19th century, Nieuw Hoop was officially granted its own province encompassing various other settlements and towns in and around the Greater Nieuw Hoop area.
Formed by Freijian settlers in the late 17th century, it quickly became a hub of interaction between the indigenous populations of Northern Hibernia and Cybellean colonists. It was documented that excluding trade in the colonies of Volkhov, Nieuw Hoop was the center for the fur and pelt trade for a significant time in all of Northern Hibernia. The city still cements its status as a trade hub for any sea trade or traffic in and out of Rensselaerswjick.
The city is infamous for "making or breaking" any political future in Federal politics, due to its large population. Only 4 presidents in history have been elected without having a majority of Nieuw Hoop back them in a general election, and it is usually the key swing city in most presidential campaigns. While being an urban center, it is a home of diversity, with many different sections and districts. There are many quarters in the city, with groups of Freijian immigrants or indigenous citizens grouping in neighborhoods.

Nieuw Hoop as a city proportionally elects five members of parliament to represent it in Federal business, one from each district of Nieuw Hoop. This has caused outcry among some other larger cities in the country, as Nieuw Hoop is the only city or settlement in the country to be represented by more than two members of parliament at one time. The current representatives of Nieuw Hoop are as follows:
- NHD1: Hamilton van Rensselaer, Deputy President of Rensselaerswjick and head of the Republican Unity Party
- NHD2: Kasper Hendriks Boers, member of the Mercantile Interest Party
- NHD3: Jan-Pieter Snijder, head of the Liberal Democrats Party, leader of the opposition, and brother of Mayor Nicolaas Snijder.
- NHD4: Ron Wildenberg, member of the Mercantile Interest Party.
- NHD5: Gantse Braaksma, head of the Worker's Bloc
Due to the political significance of Nieuw Hoop, its representatives have usually gone on to become President, Deputy President, or party leaders of their respective parties. Currently, three of the eight political parties represented in parliament have their party heads representing Nieuw Hoop.
Voting Demographics
The voting demographics of the city change based on district. While a majority of the city is generally left-leaning, certain sections of the city are home to groups of right-leaning, mostly merchant-class Freijian immigrants. In districts most heavily influenced by the trade ports and merchants of the city, for example, swings to the right are more likely while in more impoverished or lower-class districts like the Alqonquain Quarter finds left-strongholds. No parliament has ever convened with all five members of parliament representing Nieuw Hoop being of the same party.
