The Nuxenstat Institute of Technology (commonly referred to as Nuxenstat Polytechnic or NuTech) is a public research university located within the Greater Nuxenstat area of the Grand Duchy of Radictistan. The institute specializes in science and engineering education, and is the most prestigious source of academic degrees in those areas. The university operates its own radio station which is a common destination for music listeners in the Greater Nuxenstat area.

Organization

Governance

A nine-member Board of Governors is appointed by the Greater Nuxenstat Assembly. The Governors are responsible for the long-term direction of the institute and hire a President to oversee the day-to-day administration. The current President is Niklas Alekseev. The Governors are appointed for life in order to maintain their independence from government interference.

Faculties and departments

The Nuxenstat Institute of Technology has three faculties each subdivided into a number of academic departments. All departments award degrees but the Departments of History, Music, and Art do so only at the undergraduate level as part of a double degree. Template:Multicol

Campus

The main campus sits on 104 hectares of land within the heart of Greater Nuxenstat. The main campus is served by the Green Line of the Nuxenstat Metro. The institute also has a number of satellite facilities such as the Viktor Eunmak Center for Particle Physics in Erdwoodsur which houses a 2.5 km-long linear accelerator, the largest in Radictistan.

Public safety

The Nuxenstat Institute of Technology relies on the Nuxenstat Metropolitan Police and Royal Security Police to provide security and to enforce Radictistani law on campus. The university community reports few incidents of crime.

Libraries

Nuxenstat Institute of Technology has three subject libraries on its main campus: the Voycek Library (Engineering), the Svensen Library (Sciences), and the Miller Library (Arts and Social Sciences). The Voychek Library maintains the largest collection of engineering texts in Radictistan with over 1.7 million printed volumes and 1.1 million microformat items.

Reactor

As part of the H. R. Wolfensohn Nuclear Science Center, the institute has a 1.5 MW pool-type reactor. It is one of two civilian research reactors in Radictistan which use highly-enriched uranium. The NIT reactor uses fuel enriched to 20% U-235.

Academics

Undergraduate

Nuxenstat Institute of Technology awards Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Arts degrees with the overwhelming majority of undergraduates eventually receiving a B.S. or B.Eng. The institute's undergraduate engineering program is almost universally considered to be the best in Radictistan. It is also considered one of the hardest with four-year graduation rates well below the national average.

Graduate

Master of Science, Master of Engineering, and Master of Arts degrees are awarded at the postgraduate level. The university awards Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Doctor of Engineering (D.Eng.) terminal degrees. The Nuxenstat Institute of Technology stands out from other Radictistani tertiary institutions by consistently admitting more postgraduate than undergraduate students.

Admissions

Nuxenstat Institute of Technology is one of the most selective tertiary institutions in Radictistan, accepting fewer than ten percent of undergraduate and graduate applicants.

Research

Nuxenstat Institute of Technology is a major research center. It is a founding member of the Radictistan Research and Education Network, a high-speed backbone network connecting education and research institutions across Radictistan. NIT faculty are granted more patents than those at any other Radictistani university. The Viktor Eunmak Center for Particle Physics houses the longest linear particle accelerator in Radictistan. Its experimental research into phenomena of particle physics has resulted in a number of important discoveries. The Kuznets Spaceflight Center is one of the most important research facilities associated with the Radictistani space program.

NIT Press

The NIT Press is one of the most active university publishers in Radictistan. It currently publishes forty-one periodicals on engineering, science, social sciences, and the humanities. The book publishing arm has published over five thousand titles.

Student life

House system

Unique among Radictistani public universities, the Nuxenstat Institute of Technology maintains a house system for undergraduates. There are nine houses each acting as both a physical space for undergraduate accommodation and dining and as the paramount social organization for undergraduates. The nine houses are Gunther House, Bekker House, Mentsin House, Lebedev House, Branson House, Abid House, Kessler House, Rabinof House, and Voorhis House. All undergraduates belong to a House but only ninety-one percent reside on house property, the remainder having accommodations off-campus. Students advancing to graduate studies at MIT maintain their house affiliation and all associated privileges.

Media

Polyfunk Nuxenstat is the institute's student-run FM radio station. The station broadcasts twenty-four hours a day at 101.9 MHz with a format combining popular music and talk programs. Students also publish The Engineer, a weekly newspaper.

Organizations

All of Radictistan's major political parties host branches of their student wing at NIT. Every major scientific honors society is represented on campus.

Traditions

One of the most well-known traditions of the Nuxenstat Institute of Technology is the student cap. Every undergraduate is presented with their cap at their matriculation ceremony. Caps are required to be worn at all formal institute events when academic dress is not called for. It is traditional to wear the cap to final examinations in the spring and fall. The institute also has a strong pranking tradition. Notable pranks undertaken by NIT students include rewiring the University of Nuxenstat carillon and the still unexplained placement of a RAW 180 automobile on the roof of the Voycek Library.
