Pope Marcellinus II (December 17th, 1946 - March 20th, 2023, born Francesco Atanna Aglia) was the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of Montemera from 2009 to 2023. Born in Ieraskevi, Alcarres, Aglia worked for a time as a janitor as a young man before working as a technician in a food science laboratory. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1972, and from 1973 to 1979 was the Jesuit provincial superior in Alcarres. He became the archbishop of Ieraskevi in 1998 and was created a cardinal in 2001 by Pope Arnold XI. Following the death of Pope Arnold XI on 18 February 2009, a papal conclave elected Aglia as his successor on 13 March. He chose Marcellinus II as his papal name in honor of Pope Marcellinus I. Throughout his public life, Marcellinus II was noted for his humility, emphasis on God's mercy, international visibility as pope, concern for the poor, and commitment to interreligious dialogue. Marcellinus II died on March 20th, 2023, and was succeeded by Pope Clement III.
