Pun '83

Pun '83 was a phenomenon in academic publishing during the year 1983, where many publishers requested authors include a pun on the first page of their submissions, which could be in the title, the body of the text, or in footnotes. About half of the major publishers in Themiclesia participated in this movement, which only began in earnest in May. In editors' advertisements for submissions, they said authors "so impoverished of puns are respectfully requested to delay their submission until 5:00 p.m. on Dec. 31 of the current year, when a stamp date of Jan. 1, 1984 will be available: the intervening interval can be gainfully employed improving their manuscripts or in the coming up of puns, both of which will lead to the publications thereof."
