Rail transport in Chenes is a vital mode of transportation and important to the economy of the Chenique Republic for the transportation of both goods and services. Originally dominated by the Great Seven that rose during the Chenique Coal Rush, the national government nationalized the Great Seven companies into a singular state-owned organization called the Chenique National Railroad Society under the control of the Department of Transportation. The Chenique National Railroad Society also runs several railroads that run transnational, including to Gristol-Serkonos through the Great Norumbrian Railroad.
Rail transportation has been culturally relevant and is always an important political topic. Subsequent to the creation of the Chenique National Railroad Society, suburban and urban railways constructed within a state must also be owned by the state. Private sector operations are restricted specifically to freight trains and must coordinate with both the Chenique National Railroad Society and any state-owned railways for use of the railroads. The only exception to this is states that are apart of West Chenes, where no state-owned railroads exist and instead all railroads are operated in conjunction of the Department of Transportation and the Quanassee Government.
In recent times, rail transportation has become an increasingly partisan issue with the Societe de Commercants and the Mitterrand administration pushing for electrification of railroads under state ownership. New projects that have also been proposed by the Baptiste-Merlinists include the formulation and construction of the LGV Boucle Urbaine. However, funding for these projects has been heavily protested by the Anigiduwagi and West Chenes. Members from the Party d'Ouest have protested against these developments on the basis of encroachment by East Chenes and the push towards urbanization.
The Chenique government has invested in connectivity with neighboring countries, and has established routes via connection through the Great Norumbrian Railroad into Gristol-Serkonos and Rökkurlynd. Proposals have been made by the Department of Transportation to extend rail service into Mniohuta and Awasin, however many of these proposals have been voted down or rejected by the Quanassee Government.

Passenger railroads
Intercity passenger railroad transportation is held in exclusive rights to the Chenique National Railroad Society, where regional or state-wide companies are subsequently created in relation to the company and operate within a specific jurisdiction. Commuter trains are held in conjunction with the CNRS and a state's government, where typically state commuter train companies will operate with more ability to oversee smaller operations. These commuter train systems are almost always never connected with intercity railroad transportation and are limited to a state's jurisdiction. Passenger railroad transportation has historically been tightly regulated by the central government and remains one of the most regulated industries within Chenes.
