The Saint Monkey Broadcasting Service (Old Monkeyian: San Monk Bonkasta Mopanka) is a 45% Government-Owned Public-Private Broadcaster in Saint Monkey, and was founded on Christmas Day in 1978 by the Government of Saint Monkey, out of demand to improve quality TV. Between 1978 and 2003, SMBS was 100% Government owned, however in 2003, the Helley Group and Billionaire Chimpis Helley bought 55% of SMBS for 1 billion Holy Monkeys ($1.5bn). Other than the Helley group and his associates, the Government's Information Technology Ministry (SMITˢᵐᵍ), Public Organisations Ministry (SMPMˢᵐᵍ) and Communications Ministry (CFRMˢᵐᵍ), run the other 45% of the organisation.
SMBS's Headquarters, the Chimpangutan Centre Building Broadcaster Area is located in a small section of hills outside the capital, Chimpangutan, called Outer Chimpangutan. It has several buildings inside the Capital, including it's FuturesMedia building, running all the Children's shows. However, SMBS 1-5 operates in the Chimpangutan Centre Building Broadcaster Area, in an area with some of the other International Broadcasters and Domestic ones too. It is located 11km away from the outskirts of the city, and is known for it's somewhat new architecture, and interesting design. Recently, there has been calls to change the name of it's HQ to something more catchy away from the complicated name, and SMBS are thinking about it for their 2025 refurbishment.
SMBS is a full member of MEGIRBA and the IBA.
History
1975-1978: Planning
In 1975, the Government of Saint Monkey, and critics alike saw the terrible programming, with some going to the extents of saying it was the most "Brain Rotting TV ever, tourists will come to Saint Monkey but never watch the TV in the 60s or 70s." This was said in an SMBS documentary in 2000; "TV: How Saint Monkey Got So Bad at programming it". In 1975, the bad TV was used in political campaigns, after the Communist Gate 1974 political crisis, the Communist Party of Saint Monkey cut close to all funding for TV, and had plans to publicise all TV stations, and only show propaganda.
When the Green Monkeys took power, after the second elections in 1974, by 1975, they had ideas to start a Government owned media company, to bring back good programming in Saint Monkey. Eventually, they were able to secure a plot of land in the Chimpangutan Broadcaster Area, and began building the Centre Building, now SMBS's HQ. The Government were asked about this, to which they said it was an investment for future TV companies. By 1977, the construction was completed, and although they planned to name the building SMBSMEDIA, they never did, as it would give away information about this new Broadcaster.
Only until 1978, did they get broadcasting rights, and they broadcasted their first show, 25th of December 1978, and officially founded SMBS.
1978 : Founding on Christmas
On 25th December 1978, SMBS broadcasted their first show at 8am (UTC-10) in Saint Monkey using satellite, named "In the Christmas". Over that day, special Christmas shows, with several celebrities such as Darius Chimpic and Abigail Tropchimp, were broadcasted, with the Evening show called "The Travel", which reached an impressive 9 million viewers, with 23.9% of the population of Saint Monkey in 1978 (38million), watching the show.
1978-1992 : First Broadcasts and Growth of SMBS
During the first 3 months of SMBS, SMBS 1-5 channels were founded and began broadcasting 24/7, other than SMBS 4 & 5, broadcasting 24/6 and 24/5 respectively. SMBS began to grow as a broadcaster, and in 1979, they joined MEGIRBA, a Broadcasting Alliance between the Broadcasters of the Monkey Empire, and countries close by, in the South Monkeyian Peninsula and Azkamen. SMBS also participated in the now-defunct MEGIRBA Song Contest, which ran between 1969-1992, and won and hosted 4 times, including the last contest in 1992, during the 2nd Teriiblean War. SMBS also gained recognition by International broadcasters, and introduced SMBS International, which begun broadcasting to 12 countries in 1980.
In 1984, due to a massive boom in popularity for sport in Saint Monkey, SMBS opened SMBS Sport, which would now show Live Football Games, MERS races, and other sporting vents, including the NS Olympics. SMBS also opened a Live News channel, which would become very useful in 1992, during the breakout of the 2nd Teriiblean War. However, in 1987, they reported a loss of over 78 HM ($117mi) and were nearly announced bankrupt, until the SICPA (Saint Monkey International Crime Prevention Agency), who found the money hiding in a bank account worth over 300 Million Holy Monkeys ($450mi) in Llalta, and returned the money to SMBS. They were now searching for new buildings to widen their reach in Saint Monkey.
There were several new shows shown on SMBS during this period. Shows like The Travel: Future, Bang Bang, Horse Gun and Wonder of James got over 1 million views on a regular basis.
However, with the breakout of the 2nd Teriiblean War in 1992, broadcasting was heavily affected.
