Sampratiksah was the death and language deity in ancient Bhaga society. Sampratiksah was a powerful Mazde god who ruled over the realm of the dead and greedily gaurded his hoard of souls. Since he was the ruler of the dead, Sampratiksah could always be consulted in divination rituals, but he would sometimes become furious if he discovered that a petitioner was the reincarnation of one of his favorite souls, making it dangerous to seek his wisdom. In addition to ruling over the dead, Sampratiksah was the patron of all langauge and writing, which he created to manage the vast population of the dead. Without his lanaguage and the underworld, reincarnation could not take place, but this did not earn him admiration generally and rituals for Sampratiksah were designed to avert his attention and lull him into sleep.
Some theogonies suggest that Sampratiksah was once the supreme ruler of all gods and of the earth, but he grew disinterested in the world and created the underworld to be his own more perfect realm, stealing away pieces of the world to build his new home. In modern day theology, Sampratiksah is seen as a necessary balancing force in the world who was manifested as the opposite of the other gods, in both their favorable and unfavorable attributes. As a result, personality traits assigned to Sampratiksah tend to vary based on the local objects of veneration.
