The Scarano-class was a class of experimental cruisers built for the Cacertian Royal Navy as a combat platform for the then-prototype RN-EQF naval gun. Construction began on the first ship of the class in the late 1920s but delays in the development of her primary armament meant that the HMS Scarano didn’t put to sea until 1933, a year after the first Molfetta-class—the Scaranos technical successor—began sea trials.

Despite initial problems with the autoloading mechanisms on the EQF guns, the Scarano developed a reputation as a formidably aggressive warship during the Siduri War. The sixteen to twenty round per minute rate of fire of her primary armament greatly outclassed their RN-QF predecessors. Their complicated manufacture and expense, however, meant that they never fully superseded the RN-QF series.

A total of eight Scarano-class cruisers would ultimately be put to sea with the first four being completed prior the outbreak of hostilities and the remaining four completed during the war.
