The STA tank series was a series of tanks that started from the STA-1 model up to the STA-4 model. It was a combined Commonwealth, Quenminese and Joyonghean effort to produce a tank to immediately counter the Lorican threat, which was looming over from 1947. The Commonwealth had plenty of Centurions but was too expensive to transport to Asianna and that the Commonwealth was still recovering from the post-war economic crisis. The Quenminese were still recovering after the Second Europan War but its armed forces was reactivated to counter the Lorican threat (the Quenminese Army did not possess any tank until the 1950s with the Type 50). The Joyongheans on the other hand did not possess any tank that could counter the Lorican Tanks and that all the best tank the Joyongheans had was the Cromwell tank but it was ineffective to take on the Lorican tanks.

In 1948, The Commonwealth negotiated with both the Quenminese and the Joyongheans however, The Joyongheans were at first against working with their former adversaries but eventually agreed because of the Lorican Threat. The STA-1 was the first model to go into production and about 5,500 were built. It was reliable and could counter the M52s that the Loricans fielded. It went into further development up to the STA-4.

The STA series was also the Commonwealth step to develop the Type 61, which was a joint Lucian-Nihonjin and Gallian effort to produce an alternative tank to the Centurions.
