The War of Viedma was a 7 month conflict fought between the Imperial Confederation and Lijiang over the sovereignty of the planet of Viedma. The planet of Viedma had been a disputed territory between the two powers for some time, with the Viedman government declaring neutrality but edging closer to the Imperial Confederation. In XXXX, the Viedman government ran the Viedman Plurinational Referendum, where the planet overwhelming voted in favor of entering into the Imperial Confederation as an observatory member state with intention to become a primary member state. The Lijiang government declared the referendum illegal and subsequently initiated a planetary blockade and began a planet-wide invasion. Upon the invasion, Viedma split into two dominant powers, the Confederal-aligned Viedman National Government and the Lijiang-aligned Jinzhou Government. The conflict occurred almost immediately after the inauguration of Camillo Tarquinius as the Councillary Representative of the Imperial Confederation.

The war was precipitated by the renewed interest by the Viedman government in joining the Imperial Confederation as an observatory member state. This would give the Imperial Confederation an official territorial foothold in the Lesphagian Sector, which was primarily under Lijiangite control. Both Lijiang the the Imperial Confederation had been neutral over Viedma as a point of contention, which became strained when the Viedman government and the Imperial Confederation began improving relations. The war officially began when Lijiang initiated a planetary blockade of the planet with a fleet led by Vinh Quyet. Viedma had not yet entered into the fold of the Imperial Confederation, and as such was not bound to protection by any member of the confederation. Over the course of a month, Lijiang had obtained supremacy within space after the destruction of the Viedman capital ship, the V.G.S. Horitz.

The Imperial Confederation counter attack mobilized on the planet of Apregius and was organized by the Imperial Strategic Command. The liberation force was primarily commandeered by the Caniderian Armed Forces, within the Apregians, Stellans, Barylians, Octavians and the Canidiums participating. By the time of the Confederal counter-attack, 37% of Viedma was under the occupation by Lijiang. The Imperial Confederation launched a direct assault on the Lijiang planetary defenses, breaking the blockade over the course of a month, ending in the destruction of the L.R.S. Huajia. On the ground, both the Viedman resistance and the Lijiangite occupiers were in a stalemate. Lijiang at the time of the Confederal counter-attack controlled the three most major cities of Voldazo, New Viedma, and the City of Mours. The Confederal land liberation force was initially led by several secretive operations preformed by the Octavian Coderosse, and subsequently followed up by a full land invasion by the Caniderian Army, and joined in by the other five armies.

The war had significant repercussions for Viedma and Lijiang. Within Viedma, the invasion had led Viedma defenseless and exposed their relative weakness in attempting to remain independent of both Lijiang and the Imperial Confederation. Alongside that, Viedma was devastated by the effects of the blockade and subsequent partial occupation. Cities such as New Viedma, City of Mours, and Voldazo required significant rebuilding. Lijiang faced major political and military repercussions. Many important space-faring ships that were deployed to Viedma were lost to the smaller and more diverse Confederal ships and Lijiang ground troopers were unable to cope with major environmental concerns. Lijiang was considered to be vastly unprepared to be able to directly face the Imperial Confederation in battle. Subsequently, Vinh Quyet and many officers in the Special Strategic Council of Viedma were reassigned away from future frontline positions. The victory also signified the first sign of Camillo Tarquinius's political domination and the future Caniderian military domination over the Imperial Confederation.

The Imperial Confederation and Lijiang have since cut off all diplomatic ties between the two. The Lijiang Embassy on Avestion and the Confederal Embassy on Lizhou have both closed over a year in advance of their scheduled closings. Currently, Lijiang still recognizes Viedma as apart of its territory within the Lesphagian Sector. Viedma has since been fast-tracked into the status of an observatory member state within the Imperial Confederation which puts Viedma under the protection of the Imperial Confederation.

Background

The planet of Viedma and the sovereignty of the Viedma system has been a contentious issue since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Imperial Confederation and Lijiang. The planet of Viedma was left as an independent planet for a specific time and both the Imperial Confederation and Lijiang established embassies on Viedma, recognizing Viedma as an independent country. Relations between the Imperial Confederation and Lijiang had gradually worsened as the Viedman planetary government began aligning itself with the Imperial Confederation. Viedma was located in the Lesphagian Sector, closest to the Imperial Confederation's mining colony of Ludovico. The Lesphagian Sector outside of Viedma's system was firmly under the control of Lijiang. The Viedman planetary government had attempted to propose several different agreements, most notably the Viedman Autonomous Agreement, to which neither party would sign.

Tensions were raised to an all-time high when Camillo Tarquinius was elected as the Councillary Representative of the Imperial Confederation and placed Niccolò Dominicus as the Imperial Confederation's ambassador to Viedma. Camillo had announced the candidacy of Viedma within the Imperial Confederation as an observatory member state and that a referendum that had been passed within the Executive Confederal Council and the Confederal Legislative House to officially open candidacy to Viedma. The administration of Lijiang led by Su Runjiang officially opposed the move by the Imperial Confederation to incorporate Viedma. In protest, Su Runjiang recalled the Lijiang ambassador Ren Zeshu and closed the Lijiang embassy within the Imperial Confederation on Avestion. In response to this, the Imperial Confederation recalled their ambassador, Moi Haresz and closed the Confederal Embassy on the planet of Lijiang.

The Imperial Confederation afterwards called for two subsequent actions: The formation of a War Preparation Council and the authorization from the Legislative House for a Plurinational Membership Referendum by the
